Finding out who owns a commercial vehicle

Hi Not sure if this is in the right place but I hope someone can help. Today a trailer & cab came off the motorway far too quickly and put my friends car into the central reservation. I dont know how we were not hurt but I honestly believe we had Guardian Angels today. I have phoned the Police who were lovely and said they will see if there is any cctv, as its a very busy area but I am trying to find out which company own the lorry? We were absolutely terrified and all because someone drove like a tit. He seen us but carried on...I have the registration number but not the make of vehicle. I just want to send an email and maybe it will make them think next time.
Thank you

  • Put in the registration into ASK MID to get the vehicle details and if it insured. Pay £4 and you can get their insurance company details and policy number (if their are insured).

As for the registered keeper I very much doubt you will know without police help.

OP can submit a V888 to DVLA for that information if the police wont play ball.

  • If you have the registration number just give it to the police. They will provide you with the details once they obtain them so your friend can try and claim off their insurance. After all the driver whether he knows it or not failed to stop following a collision.
  • Oh yes, your friend should attend a police station and report this as soon as possible and within 24 hours.

Was there a collision, its not clear from the OP whether there was contact or the HGV simply cut his friend up.
  • Thank you for all your replies. There was no collision, thankfully. He came off the motorway far too fast, straight onto a roundabout. We were in inside lane but he couldnt keep his lorry in his lane and ended up in our lane. It sounds so trivial but it was terrifying. All I could see was this huge trailer and wheels bearing into us. I dont know how my friend did what she did but we live to tell the tale.
  • I have put the registration into ASK MID but didn't get a lot of details although I do now know it was a Daf truck. It turned into a huge transport depot so I have emailed them too.

If any damage was caused to your friend's car due to the actions of the lorry driver, then an accident has occurred as defined in law, regardless of whether there was any contact between the two vehicles.

    http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1988/52/section/170
An accident occurs when "OWING TO THE PRESENCE OF A MECHANICALLY PROPELLED VEHICLE ON A ROAD" ... injury or damage damage is caused ...etc.

The vehicle does not have to come into contact in order to cause an accident.

Therefore a claim can be made directly against the lorry driver's insurers after obtaining details from askmid

But expect to have to fight it. Everyone will try to tell you no accident has occurred if the vehicles didn't touch each other.
