Food to take on holiday

I've been thinking about this all day and having two grown up children who have been through Duke of Ed I have lots of ideas...

BUT, and my advice isn't very Old Style, this is a holiday of a lifetime to somewhere you may not ever get the chance to go to again.

You don't go until October. I would rather live on pot noodles, cuppa soups and porridge between now and then in order to scrape together the extra £1000 spending money and have a wonderful,

This post is meant in the kindest way, so I hope you will take it in the way it's intended. For us eating out is a big part of the holiday, perhaps for you, considering your auto immune disease it may not be..

Whatever you decide, have a wonderful time! :)

    Hi Pink,

I think it is wonderful what everyone has come up with.. It's amazing how everyone has tried to do their best by me... but I think that I would prefer to scrimp and scrape beforehand and save up the money so that we can enjoy the hotel...

    Thanks for that...

I really hope this is a wind up !

Look, it really would be a good idea for the OP to ask about rebooking this holiday wouldn't it ? I'm with the others who have said that one of the most enjoyable parts of my holidays is to eat local produce. I can't really see why you would book a holiday as a gift but not include food ? If it was the price which caused them to do this, surely it would have been better to look for a cheaper holiday which did include food ?

    Hi Meer

My children did it with the best of intentions but as there are so many food groups that I can't eat - not because I am fussy but because of my illness that they knew it would have been better not to book all inclusive or that because it would be totally wasted on me.. and they won't allow you to book meals for one half of the party... so they thought that it would make sense for us to pay for the food we ate... I don't think it crossed their minds that the food would be so expensive.. and, alas they won't change the holiday booking.... and I would never spoil their gift by telling them about the cost of the meals... so I'll just have to save between now and then...

I will most likely take some food with me so that I don't have to take out a second mortgage....but yes, I was joking about the bbq and the microwave oven.... :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
  • Just in case anyone is interested, I was in Morrisons tonight and I saw little sachets of Heinz soups that you stir into hot water... They would be light as a feather !!!

  • I got the impression the OP was looking for ideas to supplement a few meals in the restaurant--I believe the OP even suggested paying for half. I don't believe that eating in the restaurant every day is necessary to experience the full culture and cuisine. Furthermore, if they'll feel like it costs too much then they won't enjoy it anyway, so I think a compromise of enjoying a few meals and taking a few is a fine idea. I'm not one to judge someone else's priorities, and I certainly don't see anything wrong with enjoying a few meals out and saving money on a few. If every night in a restaurant is your idea of luxury then by all means, I'd love to contribute what I can to any idea you have to save money in aid of that, but A wonderful holiday does not have to be spent entirely in restaurants to make it memorable and the trip of a lifetime. That isn't to say I don't think it is certainly wonderful to try local food when visiting a new place, just that it doesn't have to be the focus of the entire trip, not should the OP feel so anxious in the lead up or feel that she has to change the arrangements made by her children.

Amen :) Thank you for that...

  • Thanks very much for your posts...

I didn't think I implied that I was not going to eat at the hotel at all... I was just wanting some suggestions as to what I could take with me so that I didn't have to eat in their restaurants all the time..

Some of the suggestions that have been made between this section and the other have been brilliant and I appreciate that people have taken the time to post what they think would be suitable... and I am still laughing about using the iron to make a toastie !!!

It is not possible to change the holiday, neither would I as my children would never have thought that it would cost so much to eat in a resort.. They also did it because I used to love to travel but since I became ill, I have been virtually housebound for over 5 years and this is the first of me getting back some of my life back (Although I have to be very careful what I eat - that's why they didn't pay for the food)

Neither do I visualise myself eating a pot noodle watching the sun go down but as the island has walks all the way through it to other parts of the island, I wouldn't have a problem eating something I brought with me as a picnic... like a breakfast bar or something...

I would also like to say that they really pushed the boat out for us and I am going to have a fabulous time !!! Pot noodle or no pot noodle :)

I know you were joking about the BBQ, but for anyone else's benefit I have to say this: Do NOT take disposable bbqs or similar onboard an aircraft. There is flammable fuels in them which could be a disaster in the air.

Apart from that - enjoy your holiday :)

There's a list of restricted items, some of which have been mentioned on this thread here:

    http://www.src.gov.sc/pages/customs/customs-Prohibited.aspx

You'd probably get away with one or two, but if you have quite a case full of foodstuff you may get stopped by customs.

  • If it is so much cheaper to go inclusive for the meals, could it be cheaper to change so everyone gets the all-in meals and you just do your own thing when needed?

The food needn't cost anywhere near 100 quid a day. The menus for the restaurants are online here:
    http://www3.hilton.com/en/hotels/seychelles/hilton-seychelles-labriz-resort-and-spa-SEZLBHI/dining/index.html

It all depends what you pick, the prices are in Seychelles rupees, which are about 20 to the pound. Obviously things like the all in teppanyaki dinner are expensive, but you can also find soups, salads and pastas there. Apparently there is a small village on the island with 120 inhabitants too. I'd be astonished if there wasn't at least 1 shop serving them.
