Food to take on holiday

A yes--the wraps are a good idea! Better than the ryvita/plain biscuits as you'll get more in
I also forgot about this new-fangled pre-mixed tuna stuff although now I remember some comes in pouches--much lighter than tins!
and yes on the powdered milk as well instead of longlife. I'm scribbling this down for my next adventure.0 -
The supermarkets do brioche rolls filled with chocolate or strawberry too - they would be light enough to transport and nice for breakfast, snacking
I think you could manage if you pay for hotel meals every other day, just make sure you eat a LOT on those days
Thanks Fruball... I think I could definitely live on brioche rolls filled with strawberry.... My holiday seems better and better :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:FairyPrincessk wrote: »Another thought--for the cous cous, I'd probably actually pre-mix it--so measure it out into baggies and then add a stock cube, dried herbs, sun dried toms, sultanas, pine nuts etc. I might then pack a tin or two of chick peas to mix in which will make it more filling. Not the healthiest, but a few meals for a good cause won't hurt:)
Thanks for your wonderful suggestions... I couldn't think passed instant porridge and pot noodles....Off the top of my head ,
Tea .
Coffee
Pot Noodles
Heinz sachet soups.
Biscuits for cheese .
Loaf of bread.
Breakfast cereal .( Buy some milk from the hotel )
Jam/ peanut butter.
Crisps.peanuts
Dried fruit ( you can buy little boxes )
Fruit juice/cordial .
Malt Loaf .
Canned tuna ( make sure it has a ring pull or take a can opener).
Thank you so much as well.... You've thought of a lot... I think I'm going to have a great holiday after all... I am going to stop worrying about it now... :T
Maybe all of you should come with us and we could see what we could nick from the buffet restaurant...
And I am also glad that none of you suggested I should eat 'horse'.. It looks like we have been eating too much of that already..
I was sure that I had seen olives in little sachets but I am hanged if I can remember where ????
Anyway, many thanks again.0 -

When I first read your post I really thought it would spoil your holiday but there have been some fab suggestions so I agree, don't worry about it and just look forward to it
I have seen the olives too - most supermarkets should have them I would think?
I would be taking a wine box too but i'd remove the box and just take the pouch. I'd cope with it being warm if the alternative was water :rotfl:0 -
What about some form of cereal, and some powdered milk for breakfasts. Snacks could be dried fruit and nuts, cereal bars. Tea and coffee's could be made with the powdered milk too. Lunches could be wraps as has been suggested which wont take up much room in your case, and then pouches of tuna ready mixed with sauces/mayos would make good fillers for lunches. What about a small block of cheese - may last a few days for a bit of a change, with some crackers. You could take these things out and about with you as a kind of picnic and probably wont feel much hardship, but evening meals are going to be the difficult ones. Its a shame to be on such a lovely holiday and 'making do' with whatever you can manage to take over with you, although I appeciate with the cost why you are doing this. There must surely be a store somewhere on the island though where you could get provisions. Where do people get basic provisions etc otherwise - water, medical items etc - there's usually somewhere where you should be able to pick bits up for your room.
Thanks for all your ideas... I'll be ok for tea and coffee as that is supplied ... I even get my own expresso machine !!! and I am also entitled to 24 hour room service so I'll tell them that I need if for my coffee etc... I have never heard of pouches of tuna... Are they every where ??? I don't get out much due to my illness..FairyPrincessk wrote: »A yes--the wraps are a good idea! You are all turning this into a fabulous holiday !!! When BH drags me across the island to snorkel at some other beach, I can carry my little picnics with me so it will be a joy instead of being penny pinching !!!! :T:T
Also due to the length of time we are staying, we are entitled to a free return boat ride to the main island so here's hoping we can stock up again if we plan it right... Unfortunately, we have to pay for the taxi and boat ride to and from the airport.... so we'll make the most of the free one to stock up on vittils. :j:j:j:j0 -
Neither can you buy any food as there are no shops or village etc....
The OP has said there are no shops ..............0 -

Could you see if there's any places the taxi could detour on the way from the airport to the boat, and stock up before you get there? If you're paying for it anyway then a few miles out to go via a few shops shouldn't be too much - less than the cost of eating at the hotel anyway!0

I've become fascinated by this topic. I know I'm sad:)
I've found this site:
http://www.trailcooking.com/taxonomy/term/6%2B40
It looks a bit involved for 10 days, but there may be some adaptable and easy ideas on there.
For example--it seems that if you make the freezer bag cozy, you can cook rice from just boiling water. It seems to work like a haybox method. Like I said--maybe a bit involved, but might be useful for someone else:)
Have also seen some people making cheese toasties with an iron, so perhaps if you're allowed to bring cheese back after your free taxi ride you could do those to dip in some soup. It looks like it is best to use a bit of foil to keep the iron clean for the next person.0 -

I have beaten you to it..:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: I've been looking up on how to dehydrate your own meat...
I could just see myself sitting on a boulder on the beach at sunset picking the cheese out of the holes on the bottom of the iron :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
By the way, you should have seen the look on the checkout girl's face in Morrisons, when I asked her if you can get juice in powder form :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: She asked what it was for and I said to save weight in the suitcase ... she appeared a bit dense so I explained that if she could order me up some coca cola crystals I could take them on holiday and add water at the other end...:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: She said she would look into it and get back to me the next time I am in....
Oh the joys of life .... ha ha ha0 -

Going all the way to the Seychelles and eating food you bought in Poundland back home is one of the bizarrest suggestions I've read on here in a long time.
The lady has an auto immune disease and is reluctant to eat in a fancy hotel - I doubt unwashed fruit from a market stall is more appealing.
How do you suggest she cooks the local fish and meat????
Better surely to go prepared than starve for 10 days.
ETA:- I wouldn't presume to ask the OP's medical condition, but I would guess hygiene is the issue. Anything dodgy could have very serious effects...?0
