Roof Treatments

 Are there any experts out there who can advise me on roof treatments? I, and at least one of my neighbours, have agreed with a company called Aqua Seal to have the roofs of our 20-year-old houses cleaned, de-mossed and treated. The deal comes in 2 parts: the cleaning and de-mossing, replacement of cracked tiles and repointing, followed (if you so decide) with a waterproofing treatment which sounds convincing but doubles the price.

I'm a bit concerned since the sales pitch is very similar to that used by double-glazing firms, using all the well-practiced psychological techniques which I was told to use when I worked - albeit briefly - for a home improvements company. Particularly, we were told that tiles become porous after 20-odd years which seems a bit dubious to me. Any comments?

usually the tiles are just a weather screen and you have something to stop the water underneath... ask them what they put on and why?
also, do you currently have any problems with water ingress?

  • "You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"
  • Wasn't this treatment covered on Watchdog a while back, or a company that was doing the treatment? Either way, it didn't come out very well.
  • Can I ask what they are charging? Where do you live? The only Aquaseal iv'e found doing a quick google search is in Scotland, not a professional looking website.

Also, tiles are porous anyway, 20 years won't make a difference.
  • It can be done, but not with foam, and you're being set up for a £3000.00 job, many have had it done but when they come to sell the house the buyers buidling society surveyor cribs the job and in turn they want a £3000.00 discount, or the house sale deals off. I don't know if.how you can get in touch with me but I will outline what can and should be done, promise you a three times better job, total cost about £1500.00, and will last 50 - 100 years, and it works.
