She is beautiful! I think it's normal for cats to be wary in a new home. Our boy was adopted from a friend (whose baby had allergies) and despite him being incredibly affectionate he still didn't leave the kitchen for a week, and didn't go upstairs for a couple of months. Now of course (3 years on) he's everywhere and will happily snuggle with us wherever, but when it gets near to bedtime or he thinks we're being too noisy he'll just take himself off to his bed. I think it's reassuring that they feel they have somewhere that's 'theirs' straight away0

She's gorgeous - well done for taking her in.
I've always got my cats from rescues and I now only take the rejects or the ones no-one else wants.
We got Tango in 2000 and she still runs when strangers come to the door or she hears a new voice. Men still make her cower. She always runs upstairs onto her blanket at the bottom of our bed - we call it her 'RTB' - Return To Base - it's where she feels safe.
Some cats will never fully trust people and just need a place to go where they will feel safe. Your girl just needs some time to figure out who's who and what's what... and if you can give her a space that is always her own then she can take time out when she wants to. You just can't force it - that can make them back away even more.
Oh... and Dreamies are definitely our treat of choice... our crew love them... we call it 'kitty crack'!:hello:0 -
HI
I had my 2 from a rescue as well they were 16 weeks old but one of them, sweep hid behind the sofa for ages and then when he got used to us hid when anyone else came in. I made him a bed in a tent and still almost 18 months after we had him if strangers come in he goes to his tent until they have gone. He now allows my grand children to cuddle him but when he has had enough he goes to his safe place and they know that they never ever try to get him from there. when he is ready he comes back out .
when it is just me and my hubby there he doesn't leave my side, he even comes into the bathroom with me when i need the loo and have a bath, sitting on the edge of the bath with me.
Give her time and she will settle, oh she is gorgeous by the way xxx0 -
That is a beautiful cat! Good for you for taking her in.
We have three strays. Two were very thin when we took them in, they ate food as fast as we could put it out for them. Both piled on a lot of weight and became quite chubby in the length of time it took them to understand that there would always be plenty of food. It took a year for the first to settle with eating, he had now gone down to a healthy weight. The younger cat has stopped putting weight on, and it is slowly starting to go back to healthy weight.
The third cat was a newborn with his stray mummy. No weight problems with him, he is very sleek. But then he had never been short of food.:j got married 3rd May 2013 :beer:0 -
A wee update.
Poppy seems to be recovering well. She's still nervous but she's been exploring the house quite a bit and now sits in the bedroom windows or goes on the bed and makes herself comfortable. She's still nervous around our older cat who doesn't help by hissing volubly when they get close.
Treats are working well. She's has all manner of goodies and loved them all except for cheese triangles which she doesn't seem to like.
Here's a couple of pictures of her making herself at home on the bed for the first time.
