So last night we amongst other parts of the country had copious amounts of snow causing untold accidents by numptie drivers not knowing how to drive to the conditions.

Today - thick fog, visibility down to 50 - 100M so we get cars driving with rear fogs on dazzling anyone behind them, then oncoming cars most of them with lights on some just with side lights on which you could hardly see when it was really thick, then you get the bloody idiots with no lights on at all. For gods sake !!!

Then this afternoon on way home - bright blue clear skies, and theres the muppets still with front and rear fogs on, shame the plod dont nick the lot of em for driving without due care....fe cking idiots !

Overtake em, next set of lights turn on your foglight and tap the brake pedal to the beat of whatever happens to be on the radio. ;)

As for no lights or just parking lights, this is partly why DRLs are required by law on all new cars.

Visibility below 100M due to fog? That's when rear fogs are actually supposed to be used. Then you have those annoying German cars that don't let you switch on the rear fogs without first switching on the front w-anchor lights.

In some situations it actually makes sense to just run on sidelights and fogs. Headlights will reflect back off the fog and reduce visibility even further. You probably want to use your front fogs (if fitted) however.

Another one who doesn't realise that one of the purposes of lights is so you can be seen by others.

Sidelights are to be seen, headlights are to see.

If the headlights make your ability to see worse then you turn them off.

It's not my problem that some modern cars come with crap unusable sidelights, sorry about your poor choice of vehicle. You'll have no problem seeing my Cefiro on just sides and fogs.

Other than those particular problematic cars, if you can't see a car that is running solely on sidelights you may wish to consider handing in your driving licence.
  • The fact of the matter is that in fog you will see a car coming towards you sooner if it has headlights on rather than just sidelights.

when pulling out of a junction this could be the difference between a crash or no crash.

I was irritated by the people driving during the day in terrible visibility with no lights on at all (particularly a black Focus behind me) then later on at night having someone sit behind me with their full beam headlights and fog lights blinding me each time I checked the rear view. I'm curious how people deal with the latter case, I generally slow off a bit to encourage them to overtake then pick up speed again afterwards.

Sides and (proper) front fogs is more than enough to be seen. I guess if you don't have front fogs then you may have to use headlights and just live with the fact that you can't see.

It is not legal to drive on just side lights in poor visibility.

I too can't believe the number of cars that don't put ANY lights on in fog, blizzards, driving rain etc. What's the problem - do these people think using lights uses more fuel or what?!!

Re: Fog lights - I always thought that when visability was bad, whack your fog lights on ... then whack them off when another car is behind you. I hate following cars that have left their fog lights on!

Maybe I've got it all wrong. I also thought that when motorway traffic comes to a standstill you're supposed to put on your hazards...then turn them off when another car pulls up behind you (then they're supposed to put theirs on etc).

Common courtesy IMO - warn others, but don't get up their backs!
