You can't use Sky broadband without a landline, as it's an ADSL service via your landline. No active landline, no broadband.
VM cable does not require you to take the phone and line rental service.

Virgin is a cable company so your TV Broadband and telephone are all supplied down the cable.
Sky T&Cs require you to have a landline but this can be waived for an additional fee.
However without a landline you won't be getting internet services so won't be able to use the Catch Up TV services from Sky.

Your friend is talking out of his hoop. You can't have Sky Broadband without a landline.

If you want BB and TV form Virgin, it actually works out cheaper to take the Landline than not take it........ some kind of package deal.

Maybe the OP's friend means he doesn't have a SKY landline... My Dad has Sky BB and a BT line (don't ask why, I dont knwo either!)

OP, what Sky and VM services are you actually referring to? You've posted on the 'Internet Access' board, so I've assumed you are referring to their broadband services, not TV? There is a separate board for TV.
You can certainly have Sky or VM TV services without taking their broadband or phone services. The only exception is Multiroom, which requires an active landline (though not necessarily from Sky).

I mean iPlayer, ITV Player, 4 OD( in the Spring) and Demand5 movie library etc.

Sky software updates are delivered over the Satellite downlink, not the telephone connection. If you feel you are missing one you can always perform a forced update.

Virgin Cable does not use BT land lines. It has its own network, its possible to have internet without telephony over their system.

  • I use Virgin broadband only and I've found it to be very quick and reliable. I've had it for 18 months now with no problems. I don't have the TV package - I'm on Freeview for that. My landline is with BT.

    My landline is with BT.
Consider using a VOIP service such as Vonage - it will save you money but if the internet or power is out there is no landline. Taking cable without the landline is only a few pounds cheaper than with it but VM telephony charges are high.
  • ok so im with vm on the ess. package , checked the website , it says the package is 40.99 pm , but just tv & bb without LL is 40.99 pm , ? makes no sense to me , i dont want a LL , i read some posts saying it all comes down the same cable , however i have looked at the connection and i have a splitter with one leading to LL and one leading to bb and tv , if they are seperate why cant i just have tv& bb at a redudced price ? it states quite clearly on my bill that the tv and bb package is £26 pm and the phone is 14.99 pm why am i a being forced to have a phone that i dont want and dont use , can anyone tell me why ? thanks
