transferring (porting) my number

firstly, my apologies if i've missed an existing thread on this- i did check down to page 6 but couldn't see anything...

i think i understand the porting process and it's various restrictions, but i'm unclear whether upon asking for a PAC number from my current provider, it constitutes an immediate termination of my contract, i.e. am i still free to use my old phone with my current number and provider, up until the port/transfer date, within the 30 day timeframe, to my new provider/phone?

also, as there will be some overlap, will i have to pay for an entire month's line rental if the process is completed in under 30 days? (i assume that this is a resounding yes!)

From my recent experiences with porting from 3 to Vodaphone -

Your contract with your current provider remains active until the PAC is actually used and the porting completed. You can use your existing phone until this point.

As for billing, you do get billed for the whole month as far as I am aware...

requesting a pac code is not a request to terminate your contract so have no worries about not using the phone up to the port date, it will remain active until the day of port, on the day you port your phone the old phone will stop working and the new one will have taken over, make sure you keep both phones switched off as much as poss on that day as this helps the process, if you request a pac code and then change your mind about moving then simply dont use it ! and your contract will carry on as normal with your old service provider - if you are happy to move you will be billed up to the port date with your old service provider and from that day as well from your new one, also remember that as the network has a delay of approx 48-72 hrs calls may still come through from your old service provider with the final invoice - if you have submitted your pac to the new provider and wish to cancel it you have to be quick as the new network will 'lock' it and if it gets to 2-3 days before the port date you cannot unlock it, however you can let the port go ahead and then request a pac to come back again ! so long as you are within the return period of the new provider this is not a problem - this is a real pain but at least you can do something about it if you are not happy
    hope this helps
