Wallet not fit for purpose

I bought a wallet for my husbands birthday from our local market. Had a real struggle finding one suitable as he likes a fold out part for his notes and cards then a zip up section on the outside for his coins. Finally found one I thought was perfect and a good price with it being the market. He opened it this morning and was very happy with it until he went to put his birthday money in and discovered it won't actually hold anything larger than a £5 note, 10s and 20s just stick out of the top!

Luckily I kept hold of the receipt but I seem to remember when I bought it that the stall had a big sign up that cash refunds would only be given if the item was faulty otherwise its a credit note. As this stall only sells bags and wallets and the wallet bought was the only one in the style my husband likes we would have no use for a credit note. Am I within my rights to request a cash refund as the wallet isn't fit for purpose?

I'm kicking myself for not thinking about the size as I bought it but you just assume that as it's made to hold money it would actually fit the money in it.

I can see you having trouble with this. I think you'll have trouble with the "not fit for purpose" argument. Still you can see what they say.

Was it made in the UK? If not I expect it was imported on the cheap and designed for use in a country with smaller notes than ours. Unfortunately I also think you may struggle to get your money back, but good luck when you try.

As above, it's almost certainly a European Wallet. They are often marketed as holiday wallets or something similar in the UK. So if it was imported, or it has a such description, it's exactly fit for purpose.

Not what you want to hear... But it might be worth going back to the market stall and asking?

It's similar to buying clothing that's not the right size. It's not as if it's shrunk since you bought it. Any refund/exchange would be purely goodwill.

The best "moneysaving" wallet is simply a red rubber band dropped by the postman, this adjusts to fit almost any pocket sized wad of cash, saved with helpful tips from the lovely people on this web site no doubt :money:

organise the larger 50's and 20's on the outside, with the queen's face facing inwards, the smaller denomination notes on the inside :money:

with practice, as you negotiate an imminent puchase, you can slip the correct note or notes out from the roll retained deep inside your pocket :money:

without whipping out a flashy looking wallet with pound notes protruding which could attract the jealous eyes of theives and pick pockets who are often rife in the bargainous places that we all shop :money:

a similar up cycled rubber band is ideal for holding a seperate wad of credit, membership and loyalty cards that you may currently be using

They can just say fold the note and it fits. Fit for purpose. Sorted.

I suspect as there would have been ample opportunity to examine the wallet at point of sale - I've never seen wallets for sale where you couldn't at least look at the size/shape/colour etc before purchase as they're such a personal thing.

Maybe it's designed for the US where bills are all the same size and colour (what numpty thought that was a good idea?)?

Go back to the stall, at a busy time. Point out the problem, then ask for refund, if your refused, point out the problem a bit louder, so the other potential customers hear you. I doubt the trader will want potential customers knowing that unless your walking round with a foreign currency then the wallets not fully functional.
