gps for use as speedometer

  • Many thanks to all for very informative responses. I thought that a dashboard speedo might be a good aid to monitoring my speed. In this neck of the woods there are a lot of bendy roads where it is not a good idea to be taking your eyes off the road if you can help it. Also there are frequent changes of zone from 30 to 40 mile an hour stretches lined with speed cameras.

I just want to be sure my in-car speedo is giving me correct information. I take on board the suggestions to get a friend to time me on a flat stretch of road. I will also ask friend to do do some speed checks whilst we are both driving our cars.

If I do get a gps it will be a sat-nav with the features I have outlined. I wont be paying a lot for it and it will have other uses.

    Thanks to all for help.

Don't take this the wrong way but I'm starting to doubt your driving skills.

Believe it or not I felt a lot more confident after reading some of the replies on here. Went out today and had a good run. Pushed my speed up just a couple of miles an hour more than I usually do. Strangely enough I did not notice anyone tailgating me; and would not have worried about them if they had of done.

I glance at the in-car speedo and it tells me I am doing 30 in a 30 mile an hour zone. Other cars are tail-gating me and some others are overtaking at the first opportunity. You say this is a problem that doesn't really exist?

I say it does. I say the in-car speedo is under-reading my speed and I intend to do something about it.

    Thanks for your help.

That's the most ridiculous thing I've heard all week.

It could be that your in-car speedo is inaccurate. Do you think everyone behind you realizes you're driving slightly under the speed limit? They're most likely over taking you out of impatience. Drive slightly over 30mph and see if the situation changes.

You can get a speedometer app for your phone. I use Android-Speedometer because it has a nice HUD display but there are many others.
