gps for use as speedometer
Options
Hi
I am planning to get a gps device for use as a speedometer. It is basically just to give me a "line of sight" indication of my speed, so I dont have to take my eyes off the road too often.
I am aware of the arguments regarding the merits of the gps speedo as opposed to the cars own speedo and I dont want to get in to that. I will be using the gps speedo purely as an aid in conjunction with the vehicle's own speedo.
The choice seems to be between a dedicated gps speedometer or a sat nav device which also functions as a speedo.
I have not much use for sat nav although it would be good for when I am on holiday and looking for strange places.
Would be grateful if anyone could give me any advice as to what device to go for. My main consideration is that it has a good visual display and can be mounted on the dashboard. (And is not too expensive).
Thanks
Andy

So you want to keep your eyes on the road more often... So you are buying a GPS speedometer to use in conjunction with the incar one? Thus distracting your attention from the road to a much greater extent0

I am not sure what you mean here. Could you please explain in a little more detail? Thanks.0 -
I'm assuming you mean the HUD boxes with gps built in, no idea how good they are mind, looked at them a while ago and thought it seemed a good idea, if a little tacky.

That's like having a UFO hovering in front of your car. Difficult to believe it's legal.0 -
Not a bad idea OP, if the speedo is in the same line of viewing it is like having an on screen speed projection like in some cars. As long as you are not talking on the phone/smoking/eating I can't see it as a bad thing.Five exclamation marks the sure sign of an insane mind!!!!!

Are they legal in the U.K?
A sat nav used to be cheaper and has more use even though they do not project onto the windscreen, at least they never used to.I am a LandLord,(under review) so there!:p0 -
IMO, the GPS on a sat nav isn't quick enough to give an accurate to the second speed reading. Always a couple of second behind. Are there better (more accurate) GPS systems out there?
Where will you mount this?0 -
If you are worried about speeding, some sat nav devices will ping whenever you are exceeding the speed limit as a warning. They will also give an audible warning if you are approaching a safety camera. They tell you your actual speed at all times using GPS. I use a sat nav in conjunction with a twin HD camera which mounts on the windscreen. The cameras will always be able to verify my speed and/ or liability for any collision. I am not sure what you mean about GPS v sat nav since sat navs use gps anyway - for a hundred quid you'll get a sat nav that pretty much does everythingIf a man does not keep pace with his companions, then perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away. thoreau0

If you have a smart phone, try Ulysee speedo app, there is a free version or pro for a few pence. I use a phone holder clipped to the air vent and it works pretty well, the HUD option reflects the speed up onto the screen.0
