Mobile Advice

Hi All,

I'm currently on a PAYG phone at the moment, I top up between £10 and £15 per month and get 300 free text messages.

I want to get a new phone, something that will provide some free calls and texts as well as Internet access.

I've been looking at a Samsung Galaxy Ace 2, offer is 300 minutes, unlimited texts and 1000 mb of data for £26 per month. There is an offer however that gives £320 cashback after multiple redemptions which brings the monthly fee down to £12.67. Below is a link to this phone; is this a good deal?

Redemption contracts are good, but are not everyone's cup of tee. Search the board for 'mobiles.co.uk' and see Cashback Guide for Dummies

A contract is not the only way to get a new phone. You can buy it sim-free or on PAYG and use on a sim-only contract or PAYG. 100m+100t+400Mb are available for free. If you really need 300 minutes you can get this for about £10 p.m. without a long-term commitment.

SIM free, obviously that means I just add my own?

    Yes.
A PAYG phone can be locked to some network if bough from the network, but usually even PAYG phones are unlocked if bought from third parties like CPW/mobiles.co.uk/... , p4u/d-a-p etc.

You can use your old sim or port the number to any other network PAYG or sim-only contract.
  • I'm a bit out of the game at the moment, what is a good phone to go for on a PAYG scheme?

This depends on what you want from it.
IMO in terms of value for money Ace 2 not a bad Android for £170ish price.
Some Nokia and HTC WindowsPhone phones are a good value in the same price range.

Giffgaff - £10 sim only monthly = 250 mins, unlimited text and 1gb data

Buy a phone outright if you can.

Ace 2 with a PAYG SIM containing 100m+100t+400Mb, this would suffice and allow me to access the Internet a reasonable amount of time?

Only you know if 100m+100t would suffice.
With correct settings 400Mb it's sufficient for e-mail, browsing, maps etc., especially if you use wifi at home.
It's not sufficient for streaming/downloading music and video, but you can do this on wifi without restrictions - as well as all updates.

BTW, if you still don't know free 100+100+400 is Ovivo.
  • 100 texts maybe a little low now I think about it; I was also hoping for a phone with Sat Nav.

All smartphones have it. Goggle Maps and Navigation require mobile internet connection to work but there are other apps for Android that work offline. Widows Phones have the maps built in that work ofline.

Extra texts at Ovivo cost 5p or £5 for 150
