I do have a sort of default time for having supper but can be flexible if other things crop up. I tend to do my weekly shop on the same day too but that's generally because it's when my meal plan runs out. Again I can change that if I get a better offer! After that I don't have any 'timetable' type routines.

My DH is a different story!!:D He has to do a tidying-up routine every morning which involves bins, cushions, hoovering etc and that's just a start! He also cleans the house regularly (same day if he can) whether it's dirty or not! I find it irritating but if it's a choice between that and doing it myself!:rotfl:

OP I think your DS probably likes the securtiy of things being settled in the home so don't take it as a criticism. I remember as a child If I came home from school and the house seemed a bit 'upside down' (e.g.washing drying everywhere) I felt uncomfortable as if mum wasn't expecting me.
  • My Grandparents were so stuck in a routine that they had the same meals each week i.e. a weekly menu that never changed. They also had to be at home for tea and biscuits at eleven every morning and refused any invite that conflicted with this. They missed funerals, arrived late for weddings, turned down days out ...
I seldom end up where I wanted to go, but almost always end up where I need to be

I used to work with a woman like this, she had the same meals week in week out and nothing glamorous either, corned beef salad one night and fray bentos pie the next.

    Happy moneysaving all.

My mornings are fairly routine during the week:

    * Up and dressed

    * Flask of coffee & bottle of water to DH's office (works from home)

    * Clean out and relay the fire

    * Do any washing that needs done (hand washing all but bedlinens at the mo to save cash)

    * Have breakfast and take DH coffee in bed

    * Chuck lunch in backpack and walk to work

 Before you call me a doormat, DH does all the other housework at lunchtime and pampers me something rotten when I come in from work :rotfl:

I'm a lark and he is an owl :T

Holy moly! What time do you get up, and how long does all that take in the morning???

OP - I'm not a routine person AT ALL. I hate routine!! On working days, I:
    • get up sometime between 7:30 and 9:15 (I work flexitime)
    • pull the bedclothes back to air the bed
    • shower (if in summer; in winter I tend to shower at night)
    • brush my teeth
    • wash my face, put on moisturiser and makeup
    • check the weather by looking out the window
    • hunt for clothes and get dressed
    • grab some bread for toasting at teabreak at work
    • find keys, umbrella if needed
    • leave the house
This may be done in the above order or not! So I suppose that I have a morning routine but I like to get up and out of the house ASAP, I'm quite quick.
At lunchtimes I go for a mosey around the shops, meet a friend/OH for coffee or go for a walk.

In the evenings I just do whatever takes my fancy, if I miss dinner I'll grab something. It's not the end of the world!

    Weekends = same as evenings.

I love spontaneity and an unexpected invitation!! :D

I find it interesting there are a few women on here who like routine. I've tended to notice it's predominately the guys I know who like routine, while the women always seem to prefer spontienty.

We are very flexible, although work days and children's activities make us a bit more prone to routine, ie we drop dd to brownies then do a weekly shop, but only because it fits in with the gap.

My mother lives by routine, she gets the same bus into town on a Tues and Thurs and would panic if you suggested another day! Having said that, I do believe if she was a child now she would get statemented (which makes a lot of her behaviour easier to accept.)

OH's mum & stepdad are routine people, they have tea and cake at the same time every day. If they are travelling to visit us (very rare!) they will stop to have their flask of tea at said time, even if they are only 20 mins away from our house!

I get up at around 6.30am but I make my lunch the night before and I have a hanging rail in the bedroom where on a Sunday night I hang up five work outfits, corresponding tights, undies etc :D

I listen to Radio 4 Extra whilst I do the washing and the fire and I'm usually leaving the house at about 7.40am to get to the office at 7.55am (only around a mile and a half to work and I have a gorgeous sea side commute :))
  • Oh how I would long to be more laid back and not have a routine but Im a nightmare and need to learn to chill.

I work 3 days a week so I need to be quite organised for those days, lunches made the night before etc. But on my days off it doesnt really make me relax any more, I take DS to his playgroup, home lunch and down for his afternoon nap at 12 while I fit in the housework.

Every night kids are bathed at 6pm and upstairs in bed for 7pm, I feel a nervous twitch breaking out if my routine is broken :rotfl:
  • I have a routine for chores, like needing to cook a meal before everyone claims starvation, hang laundry, make packed lunches etc.

I'm naturally an extroverted, spontaneous person so struggle hugely with routine. It actually makes me feel quite depressed. I don't even eat or drink at roughly the same times during the week. If anyone has any tips to help with these feelings (beyond feeling blessed with what I have which is how I try to combat them), please feel free to share.
