Well he had already taken half the payment, and the half the booking had come through on email.

I'm going to make a complaint anyway, as it seems out of order.

Sorry, you did have a chance to cancel - you chose to continue with the booking. Good luck with your complaint, but be aware that even those with legitimate complaints rarely get anywhere with Expedia.

Halfway through a booking with an agreed total price, when half the payment was already taken? Really?

You should have just said you didn't want it and asked for a refund. If its gone up, Expedia are not going to pay for your holiday for you, they are going to pass the cost on. The agent wouldn't normally be able to check 11 seats or more at once so the agent wouldn't know if it was going to go up or not. I take it that this is why they told you they would need to do it as two bookings.

And what the agent 'really' should have done, is asked you to wait until tomorrow to confirm it as a group for you. The hotel and the flights.
    Happy :)

The CS agent checked the hotel availability, and then said he needed to take it as two separate bookings, the total price was X (which we agreed to), he put the first card charge through, then informed us the remaining 5 would be £35 each higher...

    Bait and switch by definition.

It's not "bait and switch" by definition - why are you obsessed with categorising this under this name?

It's a mistake either made by you (unintentionally) or by the Expedia agent - not a scam...

Expedia don't set the flight prices, the airline does. As explained above airlines will only sell X number of seats at one price, then they'll increase for the next X seats etc etc

The expedia agent couldn't book more than 9 on one booking. So he must have quoted for a booking of 6 and then quoted separately for a booking of 5. This is only the same as you or me could do using 2 separate browser windows. However that's only the airline quoting 5 or 6 seats. They'd show as the same fare. However, once 6 people were actually booked, thats taken 6 of the seats at that price. The airline didnt have any, or not enough seats left at that price, therefore the quote for the remaining 5 increased.

It's pretty shabby of Expedia to give you a price that wasn't confirmed. It's a gamble they could get all seats at that price under 2 bookings. They have either quoted for a proper group booking, or not given a price at all.

Only problem is you accepted the increase and carried on at the time. It's worth complaining though, they may do something as good will you never know.

Either way whoever was in the right or wrong or whether OP had ample chances to cancel that's still proper naughty in my opinion. OP was trapped and had to pay. Tough break.

Expedia shouldn't have booked it in 2 bookings. They should have given you the correct group price. It would probably still have been the same but averaged out amongst all passengers, but at least you would have had the choice to book or not.

There is never usually more than 9 seats at one price, most often only 3 or 4 seats with the low cost carriers, and then they go up in price brackets. That is why a group booking is more expensive than booking for 2 people. People often make the mistake of thinking they can make several bookings to get the lower price but it doens't work like that as the flights will go up for the additonal bookings. A group booking is more expensive simply because there have been more seats used, but the price is averaged out amongst all passengers to make it fair.

correct but they still have a limited number of seats in each fare basis and when they are sold they go onto the next fare. My BA flights for this week rose by £80 in a day I assume due to other people booking the lower fare basis and it jumping to the next one
