Re: Earlswood - it was the part where you go down Brook Rd to Hooley Lane and through the bridge there that I was talking about, the roads around there don't have much greenery, I had completely forgotten about the Common and the lakes.
In that case you would have driven past the gasworks which is probably why it gave a bad impression.
Agree with Jody about Reigate for shopping, though Redhill does have regular markets. The other day I picked up 4 pheasants and 5 partridges for the princely sum of £20
Also agree with abanker about walking along the Brighton Road. Not a nice walk but you do get to pop into the Garland for a cheeky pint, and the Garland is a seriously good pubMortgage debt - [STRIKE]£8,811.47 [/STRIKE] Paid off!0 -
Sorry OP, if this is becoming a Earlswood debate but: Jon, along with that unsavoury looking pub next to Ruchita, The Garland is one of the few pubs we haven't checked out; maybe we'll give it a go some time now you've said that!
Re Redhill, it has a good train station, the Home Cottage is a really nice pub especially weather-permitting when you can sit in the lovely outdoor area, the Thurs/Sat market is good especially for cheap fruit and veg and Everest Spice is a great Indian. Other than that, I too would rather head to Reigate and I refer to Redhill-Reigate as it is basically one town although no doubt Reigate residents would heavily deny that haha! A lot of people in Redhill and Earlswood probably live closer to Reigate town centre than a lot of people with RH2 postcodes.0 -

At least they'll be handy if you ever need them lol (hopefully you won't though!):eek:0 -
I'd suggest the Coulsdon area, towards the downs. It's quiet, but the transport links are good, with direct links to Croydon and central London, and the downs are close by, so it has a bit of a villagey feel.

Thank you, actually those houses look nice, particularly one of them, unfortunately the small bedroom is a little bit small for our needs. I hadn't realised Coulsdon was so green. That would be an idea location for commuting to work for everyone. Caterham might also be an option, I think realistically we will be looking for somewhere on the outskirts of a town, rather than a village...

That's ok no problem at all, it's great to know people's honest opinions about places

Caterham would be ideal for driving to Warlingham. Also 25 mins on train into Croydon (faster if you go from Upper Warlingham) or 30-45 mins on a bus into Croydon.
We're looking to buy at the moment and there's quite a few properties around in your price range, although some may not be as separated from others as you'd like. There's been a lot of development in the past and lots of terraces around at high prices.0 -
Hi all after much research and consideration and driving around we think we would like to try and buy somewhere in Oxted. I know everywhere there are nicer parts than others and someone mentioned the Mill Lane area of Hurst Green is not the nicest, does anyone else have any experience of nice (affordable) places or anywhere less pleasant. I do realise that some parts of Oxted are expensive but hopefully we will be able to find something nice.
On further research Oxted is totally out of our price range...back looking for more houses within our budget.0 -
Another option we thought about is trying to buy something really run down and then refurbish, does anyone know of places to search for this type of property please? There don't seem to be any auction Places locally.0

Ashtead is really nice, though not so villagey anymore. Dorking is ok, Reigate is nice. But £280k don't buy a lot these days...0
-
Unfortunately, £280k will only get you a flat/ex Council/something you would have to completely gut not just 'do up' in any areas that are already well-established such as Oxted or Reigate.
So (sorry!!) again I suggest Earlswood as being a good compromise. When we were in the EAs on Saturday we were told that "snobby" [his words] Reigate residents looking to move up but unable to afford Reigate were stating that they wouldn't consider Redhill but did like Earlswood. That's how 'gentrification' begins I believe. I put it in inverted commas because Earlswood doesn't need gentrifying as such, it's already got lovely housing stock, a mainline station and excellent schools, so it will really just become more fashionable.
