trying to order sky - do I need landline

Trying to order SKY TV (not broadband). on the order page it wants a working landline phone number to connect to in order to activate.

We don't have such a thing. Is this something we can do without.

When Sky TV is installed the box needs to be connected to a phone line for activation and the minimum term.

When I had mine installed it was done by an independent installer (I live in a flat with a communal system) who just called Sky and got the box activated and it was never connected to a phone line.

Bear in mind if you have no phone line you won't be able to order movies and PPV sports etc.

I'd call Sky and ask them what to do.

Without a broadband connection, you won't be able to use any of the Catchup, Library or Sky Store features. Unless of course you have cable broadband.

Sky TV can be activated without a phone line. Sky prefer you to have a phone line, but it's perfectly possible to have the TV service without one.

Unless you're getting multi-room; I believe it's a necessity to connect any additional boxes to a working phone line. I think is in place to stop people using the much cheaper multi-room subscription in a different property.

Don't the first 2 paragraphs contradict each other?

In Sky's Ts&Cs it states you must connect your Sky Box to a working phone line for the minimum term. However, when the indy installer came round and installed my TV all he did was call Sky because the phone socket is on the opposite side of the flat in a completely different room.

Who knows what witchcraft they employ.

Yep, they want the box connected so that pay tv can be accessed.

There may well be other reasons, maybe data collection, I'm not sure.

When my neighbour got Sky, they too didn't have a landline but it was installed okay.

BTW if you have not yet ordered your Sky and would like referring please let me know; Sky regularly have offers where you receive vouchers for signing up, usually up to £50 or so but I can check if you are interested.

ETA: Just checked and it's up to £75 vouchers depending on which vouchers you would like

You can buy out the 'connected line' requirement at sign-up for about a £20 one-off payment (unless you require Multiroom, in which you must have all boxes permanently connected to a working landline in order to conduct the callbacks).
Sky do not otherwise enforce the requirement, and some installers don't care either.
Whether this precludes online sign up, I don't know. Will the website accept a mobile number?

Had an on-line chat to 'Sharique' at Sky. He said no probs without phone line just to click on the 'phone line ordered' at the order stage.

He said no additional fee would be required and it would work fine. He also said that the T & C's had recently been changed so that no extra fee would be charged.

I of course did not believe him but have ordered anyway using my MSE 50% code and have kept the transcript from our chat.
