Or tell her to open an account with a taxi firm either local to her or local to her school and pay for transport.
45p/mile sounds alright to me though.... and ops not towing a caravan so that's not really relevant0 -

This is the motoring thread, whats relevant got to do with anything;)
OP only you know how you really feel about doing it, and your relationship etc, personally I think do it without charge or dont do it at all0 -
For comparison our Nursery charges £3 per trip per child to or from school. That's for 1.4 miles each way, up to 6 in the car.0

As you appear not to want to do it, just don't do it.
Hmmm..... it's not so simple when kids are involved.
Its the kids who will be stood in the hail, rain and snow ...The HMRC figures were great - decades ago- and don't reflect the true running of most cars, apart from cheapest euroboxes.
I think the figures are reasonably generous for what they are meant for.
45p/mile ASSUMES you have a car that you occasionally use for business.
For the average punter that means you are doing say 7-8k/yr completely out of work and then up to 10k a year FOR work.
As such you can get a car allowance as well. You just get taxed on it.
My BIG (3L) diesel gets 40mpg quite easily, if I plan my journeys and drive carefully I get easily 50 mpg
That means fuel costs are for 50 miles about £6.50 - £7.00
Compensation @ 45p/mile is £22.50 leaving £15.50-£15.00 pounds/50 miles or £300 every thousand miles.0 -

My fixed costs (on my lowish mileage) workout at around 16p/mile (excluding Depreciation) fuel without towing at around 30p/mile. So that is what it costs me for every mile I drive.
It does become as I know and Steve has highlighted a real bugbear when the family start to take the pith, both from a money and more importantly for many the time factor.
Where is the school bus out of interest?0 -

Have a search for the This is Money, True cost of running a car calculator. For a quick comparison, I put in the details of the car I am running privately, even trade price and no finance, it came out at 54ppm (and that didn't even include my snow tyres!).0
