Cheap Removal Van?

Hi

I currently live in London and I will shortly be moving to Stafford. I'm trying to figure out how to move my stuff! A car is too small - but I think a small van would suffice.

Does anyone know of any cheap removal or van hire firms? I'm thinking I'll have to drive the van up to Stafford with my stuff, then drive back down to London with it and get a train back to Stafford.

It all seems very long winded though. Are there van hire firms where I could drop it off at a depo near Stafford?

And please let me know of any ones at a good price!

Cheers, Smyths

    Google 'van hire'?

Compare price for local 'man with a van' who will
    a) help you load /unload and
    b) save you the return trip

If you drive a van up there yourself, don't be tempted to cruise on the motorway at 70 or 80mph as it will drink fuel, try to cruise at between 60 and 65mph

With the bigger hire companies that have depots throughout the Country can't you hire from one place and drop off at another. Even if it cost more it may be better than having to take it back.

If you go for a man+van, remember to compare prices from people in both London and Stafford - it doesn't matter to you whether he does the empty leg before or after he moves your stuff.

Have a look on Ebay, plenty of couriers on there. Can you box everything up and put into pallet size parcels? some couriers will charge about £30/40 each.

  • I was at Costco yesterday and I noticed they rent out vans. I think it was £14 an hour.

Definitely google man and van - I'd try the stafford area as probably cheaper than London.

We paid £200 for a van full (and 2 men packed it all) from Manchester to travel 30 miles.

    too many comps..not enough time!
  • I've used Northgate van hire a few times and always found them to be very good value (I moved recently and paid £65 for a weekend for a Mercedes sprinter and on previous moves they've always been cheaper than the competition) and they offer a good service. Unlike some of the smaller companies the vans are always in good condition and usually quite new. They were originally recommended to me by a fleet manager in the public sector because they do a lot of fleet work.

They have depots around the country and will do one-way rentals (although the cost is higher than if you return it yourself). You need to book as soon as you can really because if you leave it to the last minute they might not have a van available.

  • depending where in london you are I always get my vans from these guys

Under £50 for a transit for 24 hours. And fairly new vans so good fuel economy.

If you only have 1 van load you can probably get away without a man in a van, just rope in a friend to help lift.
  • try www.anyvan.com

I've used this website twice and would certainly recommend it
