Car hire credit card charge

It's been a while since I hired a car but a colleague mentioned the other day that she was once charged £600 on her credit card - well the money was blocked but not actually taken. Is this the norm? What rental companies can you hire from that do not do this? I will be hiring a car next weekend Friday-Sunday and cannot afford for £600ish to be blocked on my card:eek:

I think they all do this, unless you buy their (usually) rip-off "Super CDW" cover when they might not. But even then they may block something eg the cost of fuel. You really need a card with a limit much higher than you ever use - hotels block amounts too quite often.

£600 sounds quite low by today's standards - it's not unusual for them to block well over a thousand, and that's just at the cheaper end of the car range.
