    Herman,

Your results seem to show a 1MB line if your max download is at 120KB, unless you did it at a very busy time or you're living far from an exchange! For a 2MB connection it should be 250KB! See my results below. You may want to try and test the connection at off-peak times and see if you still get the same results. Also do the test 3 times to make sure as each time can be different depending on lots of factors.

Done speed tests sooooo many times, and always seem to get about 980kbps, no what what time of the day i do it.

The AOL guy said that the transfer rate i should get should be about 1/16th of the connection speed, ie 1/16th of 2MB is 125kbps, which is what i got when i was talking to him.

This is what i always get and no, i don't live far from the exchange at all.

Sorry to hear its not sorted out yet.

There could be some confusion between kbps and KB/sec

Most speedtesters will give the test result in kbps
for a 2mb connection it should be around 1900 kbps on a good day (perhaps a bit less to allow for contention at different times of the day)

if you download a file via your browser, such as this one

    http://www.f2s.net/test8.zip

then it will download as KB/sec
you should see around 237 KB/sec for a 2mb connection

That is where the confusion is coming in.
One speed is in kilobits/sec while the other is kilobytes/sec
One is 1/8th of the other, but they are the same speed.
So for a good 2mb connection you should see around 1900 kbps or 237 KB/sec

Sorry to elaborate that point but its probably best that you understand it for when you go back to those AOL people.

Out of interest, looking in your router again at that adsl status page, does it give any figures for line attenuation and noise margins?

    hi Herman

Sorry to hear AOL are messing you around ...i had the same experience, it was only sorted when i contacted ISPA, and made a complaint via them. The tech team told me that anything between 400kbps and 2000kbps on the silver package was considered normal (BT's Stats) quite a wide margin eh!!!.

My router was conecting at well over 2mb but my download speeds were similar to yours at just under 1mb, i found this suspicious as when i first migrated to AOL i was getting between 1800kbs/2000kbps this then dropped after a few weeks and never picked up again. As i mentioned earlier AOL's comlaints manager confirmed i had been throttled/capped due to the nature of my deal of £9.99, but he was unaware why (so he says!!) and said he would lift it imideately, he did and within minutes my download speeds were back to normal between 1800/200kbps.

Check your router stats, see what your connecting at and if your not happy with what your being told ...complain to ISPA.

What price are you paying by the way, did you get the £9.99 deal??.... has anybody else experienced this type of capping ????

Who are ISPA and how do I contact them?

    And I've been paying £14.99.
