Ways to gauge oil in tank

I saw another threat where others were discussing this, basically how to accurately monitor oil left in tank. I was wondering if anyone had bought the apollo monitoring devices and if they are accurate to within, say, 20 litres, or if any device will give an accurate reading to this level. My tank is a 600 gallon beehive - not sure how many litres this is.

  • If you were smart, you would actually know there are different types of gallon, before making daft comments.

    There's always one :D

Thought you weren't buying any more oil anyways?

I had to Google to find out what shape that is [as real beehives come in various shapes]. Seems to me that it's pretty well a vertical axis cylinder so depth of oil in tank will be proportional to volume remaining. Just divide 600x4.54 [2700litres] by height from bottom of tank to max. oil level in cm. to get no. of litres per cm. e.g. if height is 1900 cm that's 1.42 litres per cm. or 20 litres per 14 cm. . I always recommend using a tiling lath as a dipstick and mine is marked every 500 litres - foolproof and very accurate. I've heard of a number of cases where electronic gauges have played up.

That would be US Gallon and Imperial Gallon then, if you had two ounces of brain you would know how to alter the differing units of measurement :D bless ya

As noone else is prepared or knows enough to help out I've returned. I've found a beehive oil tank ref. PC 2500LV which is 2500 litre and not 1700 l.[600 gall.] but it will do as an example. It's 155 cm. high so if we discount the odd 5 cm. that makes max. oil depth 150 cm. for 2500 litres i.e. 18 l./cm. [I'm using cm. as being more useable units than mm.]. That means that if you want a reading to 20l. that's about 1 cm. which is quite feasible. All this assumes that the tank is a vertical cylinder whereas the beehive tapers at the top but that's quite a small error overall as you will be most interested in the last 100l. of fuel situation i.e. re-ordering time. I have nothing to add to my comments re. oil depth measuring method.

What I'm interested in is not being defrauded by the delivery companies, who have numerousmethods of giving less oil than the customer pays for. Not sure if your method would work, given the indentation of the beehive shape.

I've been buying oil for 15 years for my present place and have never heard of such fraud. The tankers have meters which give a printout but, more importantly, I've never seen any discrepancy between what they say they've delivered and what my dipstick readings show. There is no mains gas for many miles around here and so there are lots of oil purchasers and I think that word would have got around if such fraud was suspected.

    No.

They give a reasonable estimate and are a good guide of when to order a refill (esp on a larger tank), but they are not precise enough to guarantee not running out if you let the tank run really low.
