Can I update an unlocked phone?

Hi All,

I really appreciated all your advice over my motorola Defy phone getting unlocked by T-mobile, which I've now got with Ovivo.

I see that there is an update available for the phone and I am not sure whether to update it as I don't know if that would affect the phone being unlocked. :(

Thanks in advance

Can't see why it would if its just an update to the phone's OS.

You should be able to but it will be the T-Mobile branded upgrade not a stock unbranded one.

It won't re-lock it but branded firmware can be annoying if your no longer on the same network and it offer functions you can no longer use.
  • I own a motorola Defy, and my defy is curretnly running android Jellybean
    ( version 4.1.2 )
Updating the phone may sound like a daunting process, but its worth it. As in the case of the defy its like having a new faster more responsive phone, as well as increasing the phones lifespan somewhat and saving you money in the process ( no upgrade fee drop to a cheaper sim only contract )

what version of android os your Defy currently running?

    Hi Richard

I just updated it today.. It always said there were no updates available, but when I went onto the Motorola site there was. The most obvious difference is the Motorola symbol at the start... It is now red... when I saw it, I thought it meant the phone was kaput

I'm not sure which numbers you want:

    System version: 34.177.3
    Firmware version: 2.2.2

I connected it again to motorola in case it updated one step at a time but that is it fully updated now.

    Cheers
