head unit removal/no sound

I am only getting sound from my rear speakers despite playing around with the balance and fader buttons. This has been like it since I bought the car to weeks ago and I want to get it fixed, but I can't say for sure how long it has been like it.
My first thought is that for some reason the speaker cables aren't connected to the stereo properly and I want to take the stereo out to check. What sort of tool do I need to use and can I pick one up at Halfords as there is one very close by.
This is my head unit-

I have checked to make sure that there are speakers behind the front panels!

Whatever you do, do not tell anyone what kind of car, make, model, year it is. someone might be able to help straight away if that happens.
Looks like a Saab to me, a 9-5?
If you are concerned about sound from the rear, why do we see a photo of the front speakers?
Saab started faffing about with Optic's for their Amps depending what year it was/is. On my old Saab an optical link went to the Amp (underseat or boot), then cables to the speakers.
EDIT: Searched this out, 4 knitting needles.

its either the block or the amp inside the headunit is fubar, is it a blaupunkt head unit, or the saab GM generic one? does it have the separate AMP and sub in the boot from factory thats on the audio out port.0

I am guessing it's original- I have been trying to find info on it all afternoon on the net and can't get anywhere. I can't even get it out the dash to see the back of it. There is nothing in the boot that I have noticed.
edit- it is an 4947123 head unit.0 -
getting the unit out of the dash is fairly easy if you have the right tools.

as mentioned above, you need 4 straightened coat hangers or something similar that fits in the holes, push them right in (they will release the catch) and once all four have realeased the catch, you push the coat hangers/tools outwards and pull the unit out as shown in the above you tube link..
then you can check the wires and make sure there connected to the back of the unit. also check the other side (speakers) and make sure the cables are connected.
if your confident enough, once youve established which wires goes where, you can use the wires that you know work on the speakers that dont work to see if it makes it work. if they start working, then its a wiring issue, if they still dont then perhaps your speakers are faulty.
register for talk audio and they will give you more solutions0 -

its a generic as blaupunkt ones have the label and logo on the serial number sticker and so hence its not a optional extra unit from the dealers from new so wont have a audiobus out for a amp and boot subwoofer.
before you disconnect the unit i strongly suggest you find the security code number for the unit before disconnection of the unit.
to test the inside amp of the unit, to see if its going i would rank up the bass, turn the fade to front speaker, turn down treble to -0 and turn the unit up to full if you hear white noise or low level music whilst on full vol then its the unit if theres nothing then theres an issue with the speaker or wires.0 -
Even though the front speakers aren't working?
I have bought some din removal tools but I still can't get the damn thing out.0 -
Are you sure you are pusing the pins in far enough? When you insert them, they force the retaining lugs close to the body of the unit.
It is normal to struggle though, you will normally find one side will release easier then the other. Once you get one side free, keep wobbling it and playing with the releasing pins until it comes free (or the first side pops back in again so you have to start all over again).
It seems the front speakers are connected directly into the unit you are trying to remove. Looks like both Front and Rear are on the same plug so the problem is likely to be elsewhere (but useful for continuity checks).

I just had another read about on my old Saab Forums.
It seems quite common for the dash speakers to simply fail, take another (from the rear shelf) and simply plug in to test?
I think the door speakers are similar to the 9-3SS where they are driven from a seperate AMP in the passenger footwell area (behind kick panel). This is seperately fused.0
