Dear Redundancy Board
I am having to ask what would you expect to get for going voluntarily.
I have worked there 7 years and 3 months in a senior sales role, my remit is changing and I have to spend more time at HQ 3 1/2 hours away which I do not really fancy. There are 5 of us at risk of redundancy but they are creating 4 new jobs with the changed remits. They are also at the same time hiring someone to cover another geographical area so its not as if its a cost cutting excessive.
This is the letter I got:
Furtherto your request for more information regarding redundancy payment: should yoube made redundant and not find suitable alternative employment, you will beentitled to a statutory redundancy entitlement of £3,375.00. You would also beentitled to notice of 7 weeks. In most circumstances you would usually be askedto work your notice however if that was not possible you would be paid for yournotice and in that eventuality that would equate to £4,749.84.
Ifyou were considering accepting voluntary redundancy, we could offer a paymentof £10,000 that sum would cover all of your entitlements including notice, holiday and statutory redundancy.
The figures all fit but the £3375 plus £4749.84 equals £8124.84 take off £10,000 thats £1875.16 for offering to go voluntarily. I find that a bit chocking as usually they are a very generous company. Do you think they could have got themselves muddled up thinking the £4749,84 incl statutory and lieu of notice so £10,000 sounds good.
I want to ask to work my 7 weeks and also have £10,000.
Any advice please? What does people usually get offered as voluntary redundancy?

its more than they would have to give so the figure is most likely correct. You could always try and negotiate. What amount is acceptable for you?
If its 12k then I would start at 14k and work your way downDon't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0 -
Thanks for the tip good idea to start higher I am almost sure the person who made the offer of £10k is thinking they are giving me £5k extra but will have to ask.
I shall use the fact that they are getting rid of an existing person and hiring and identical post in a different geographical area.
Anyone else? How much extra have you been offered on top of the statutory amount for me it equates to 2 1/2 week not great is it.Save £12k in 25 No 49

The problem you have is that if the company know they are doing everything by the book and doing it correct that they are unlikely to push the compensation up alot. They maybe offering extra for ease but if they feel they are in the right i doubt you would be able to push to hard.
If the company know they are on dodgy ground they probably are more likely to accept paying a little more to save on the hassle of possible tribunals.
But then nothing is guaranteed in how they will actDon't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0 -
The redundancy makes you 42
Don't count notice as compensation.
They are offering very little but actualy ay not have to offer anything if the contract allows for the variations.
How much holiday will be due?0 -
I have 4 days holiday left but was planning to use to during the 7 weeks notice. And yes I am 42.
I still hope it's a mistake as because the company did so well in 2012 everyone in the whole company from admin to boss got a 3% bonus (calculated from total annual salary) my offer is just about on par with that.Save £12k in 25 No 49

When offered VR people may have signed a compromise agreement which will mean they cannot disclose figures.
Is it just you being made redundant?0 -
Thanks cr1mson I understand that's why I said mine would work out as 2 weeks pay.
There are 4 posts for 5 people so one has to go and we are the only team to be affected. In the company's history they have never made anyone redundant have always increased staff. None of the other 4 can afford to take VR and they are so much nearer to HQ they won't have a problem with working one day a week from there. Also the change to our jobs in terms of remit and structure is one I would rather not do hence my thought is to take the VR rather than not get 1 of the jobs. I terms of experience and distance to office I am at a distinct disadvantage.Save £12k in 25 No 49

Even saying 2 weeks pay may be precluded depending on compromise agreement.0 -
The £10k pay off is even less than you think
there is over £500 holiday pay dues for the 4 days.
so is a littlover £1k extra to go just about bringing the offer up to 1weeks pay not capped
£10k+notice and holiday would be more reasonable its around 2weeks full pay per year.
As an example NHS gives 4weeks per year.0 -
You are right it's even worse, plan is to speak to my boss tomorrow asking her if she is aware of the figures then request a meeting with her boss who made the offer. Thanks for all of this it's most usefulSave £12k in 25 No 49
