My 'approach' was a relative giving me half of an inheritance which she had received unexpectedly. She did not 'need' it all herself as she has a substantial retirement income(more than I earn anyway) and investment portfolio already, and I would get it when she died anyway, so she said she would rather pay my debts off, and let me have a life now. I offered to pay it back and she said just never do it again, and I won't. I suspect I would be disinherited if I did.

I did repeatedly turn it down by the way, but she insisted.

I feel ashamed to be here on this thread with people who are doing it themselves when I have been gifted this amount of money:(.

So I can claim no credit in getting my debts paid off after only 10 months with PayPlan.

Last year a family member took their own life leaving a wife and family, due to problems with money/redundancy, this affected us all very badly. Maybe this made her so insistent.

Ah that's a nice gesture. Will keep her on the straight and narrow too I suspect as you wouldn't want to let the person down.

You've done really well to get F&Fs in.

Sorry to hear about the other family member. Plenty more things more important than money aren't there?

Aww Moo - there is absolutely no shame in that bless ya. You support us all and I've certainly benefited :D glad to hear your DFD is maybe a little closer now and so, so, sorry to hear about your family member.

Woop - mine starts 1st June as well (all things being well too). Can't wait for it to be up and running. Feeling nervous but like you - only keeping sane by folks on here.
Don't leave it too long. Keep a careful eye on monthly statements and if you can see interest and/or charges being added, send off a letter of complaint ASAP.

It's much easier to get interest stopped early on in a DMP, so the sooner you act, the better. Once you start approaching minimum payments, the creditors like to use that as an excuse and say you are not in financial difficulty, so they can't help you any more

Will keep this in mind TTFTM. Was going to leave it about 6 months in before pushing for interest free. But I will follow your advice and get straight on them if they don't play ball :D

Sending off my creditor letters this weekend. OH's now all taken care of and a number of £1 token payments have been cashed. Barclays were really quick off the mark after receiving my letter to close my bank account and did so in two days. At least that should mean I don't get loaded with returned DD charges :)

Will send token payments for May which will give me a bit of a surplus to put away for emergencies and then we are good to go.

Just wondering if I should start a debt free diary, or just keep posting progress, problems and solutions on here - or do a bit of both - thoughts please :)

Have a great weekend all. Am going to spend a lovely evening with my very best friends tomorrow. They know what we're going through and so have invited us round for a few drinkies and munchies at their house - gotta say, without mates like them and virtual buddies on here... don't know how else I would cope.

Okay - maybes getting a bit too slushy now, so will end.

Have a great weekend one and all :)

  • Hello,

I really feel like we have turned a corner today. 11 token payments of £5 sent to all unsecured creditors, recorded delivery, along with accompanying letters advising of move to a SC DMP.

Had a minor wobble moment after divvying out this months money under the new plan. We (well I) had mis-allocated our money thinking our priority debt mortgage payment this month would be £735 when in fact it is £1016. I had "forgotten" that we only switch from our 5 year fixed rate to a lower variable rate from next month! Nearly failed before we had started

Why oh why did we lock into a fixed rate literally a couple of weeks before the 2008 credit crunch? Isn't hindsight a wonderful thing!

Anyhow all back on track and set up budget and payments in an iPhone app called "Account Tracker" from Graham Haley - FANTASTIC - it will save us from anymore budgeting mishaps!

    Hey Arty,

Speak to SC and see if you can reduce or delay your first month's payment to account for the temporary miscalculation.

We did the same as you and entered in to a 8%+ fixed rate just before the crash.. gulp! Soon coming to and end, but by then we'll be in a DMP so no chance of getting a favourable rate on a fixed term, so will have to go SVR. Only good thing is we will try and keep our monthly payments the same and it will reduce the years - if that's how it works. No good with these sorts of things.

I wouldnt feel guilty about it Moo, think of it that the money was a gift (which you really didnt want and that its been put to good use.

If my father had died during the time I was paying off my debts , I would have done exactly the same as you !.

Once you have cleared everything, remember not to repeat your original mistakes, and you will be ok !.

    Congrats & well done !.

No, no, no - we don't do shame here! My goodness if you are walking around with a paper bag over your head then we will all have to do the same, as we have all (at some time) felt ashamed of the mess we got into. If you hadn't have been gifted the money then you would still be doing it for yourself the same as the rest of us. Well done on the F&F settlements. One big step to being debt free:j
