N Power admit they have an accounting glitch in their system
Options
I switched from N Power to another supplier in late September 2012 and recieved a termination of account confirmation letter from N Power and in that letter I was advised that I would recieve a final statement within 30 days .. I received that statement in October 2012 (all done & dusted I thought)
Not so, I am afraid ..
On 25th Jan 2013 I was sent a final electricity bill from N Power for £340.00 and am advised this will be taken from my account on 4th Mar 2013 ..
On 26th of Jan 2013 I was sent a letter informing me that my regular payment scheme had been cancelled ..
On the 2nd of February 2013 I was sent a copy of the letter sent on the 26th of January 2013 ..
Today I contacted N Power and they confirmed that when I left them in September 2012 my account was in order and that they had paid the credit balance due to me ..
They also stated that they were aware of a glitch in their accounting systems and were endeavouring to rectify the problems .. I duly requested that they send me a written confirmation of what had been explained .. I was informed that I was speaking to a call centre and that they were unable to do that ..
On advising them that if any money was taken from my account I would sue, they instantly changed tack and attempted to transfer me to customer complaints .. After a short wait I was informed there was a 10 minute waiting time for that call .. I was advised that the call centre would make a note of my concerns ..
I was very explicid with them when I repeated that if any money was taken or attempted to be taken from my account in error that I would sue ..
For the record ..
The reasons I left N Power are as follows ..
They tricked me into accepting them by underquoting what my monthly Direct Debit payment would be ..
They use other tricks to hoodwink unwary customers ..
I found their business practices to be unsavoury at best ..
Be aware, be very aware & most importantly keep all the paperwork ..

When you leave any supplier with which you had a direct debit agreement you should cancel the direct debit with the bank after the final account is settled. They can threat about taking money all they like, but would not be able to do so. If they do take money which is unauthorised then the direct debit guarantee scheme should protect you.
I know it's not the answer, but it will help safeguard your money.0 -
I agree with ther above, don't rely on threats to sue or even the ddi guarantee, just contact your bank and cancel the direct debit instruction. They will then not be able to claim any money even if they wanted / try to0

...but be aware NP COULD attempt to reinstate the DD ...and if its within 15 (??) months of initial stop the Bank might allow reinstatement. Certainly happened to me with a cancelled Direct debit to BT some months after I had moved to another telecom provider.I ,fortunately, picked it up from online banking and cancelled it again before they nicked any unowed cash from my account!!!:rotfl:0
