The Great British Barbeque

I'm doing a BBQ tommorow night for my daughters birthday and I will have about 35 guests plus 5-6 of her school friends and 6 kids

Having only catered for small numbers before I need a bit of a hand with what to cook, where to get it and how much it costs

I'm not restricted on money but I'd rather do this fairly cheaply (so no "go to M&S suggestions!) as she's had a small fortune spent on her for birthday and I don't want my new neighbours to think I'm a cheapskate!

Please help!

you could do some veggie options they would be cheaper than having everything being meat, veggie kebabs on sticks - peppers, onions, courgettes etc, with some seasoning on them are yummy. also, corn on the cob, but buy a frozen bag (cheaper) and then cook it for a few mins then finish on BBQ.
    do loads of salad!
and potato salad (make your own dont buy it, potatos, mayo and some garlic with onions in if you want..yummy)
and have some crisps and dip type things, will save time on the cooking and there will be plently of food to nibble
the last BBQ we went to, they had been to the butcher for their burgers and sausage and chicken and was the best BBQ ever. dont know price-wise how that would work out though.
have a good one and hope the weather stays nice xx

How about mini jacket potatoes? They will cook much faster than large ones and look cuter. You can do them in the oven if there is no room on the barbecue and serve them with grated cheese/coleslaw.

We also have a metal basket for doing roast veggies on the barbecue - chop up carrots/courgettes/aubergines, put some sort of marinade on and then barbecue them. Saves threading them onto kebab skewers.

Sausages. Have hotdog rolls ready, ketchup, mustard etc.

Chicken drumsticks - Make a baste of butter, swedish vegetable bullion powder, lemon juice, garlic, maggi liquid, simmer in a pot for a few minutes. Partially cook chicken in microwave, onto coals, basting with mixture.

Toasted sandwiches - grated cheese, tomato, onion (I don't add onion for the kids), after all food is cooked, put each sandwich onto coals for a while ensuring it doesn't burn. Delicious smokey tasting toasted sandwiches. ;)

Baked bean and banana salad - Tin baked beans, 2 bananas, 3 tbl spns mayo, mix together - simple and yummy!

Green salad and potato salad (add chopped boiled egg).

    Just some ideas! :D

I did a bbq for 25 weekend before last for DH birthday and had to work on a very tight budget. I bought the Tesco value frozen chicken pieces (£2.50 1kg). Let them defrost them stick them in a big bowl. Cover with oil and a few jars of whatever seasoning you like (Tandoori, cajan etc- all about 60-70p per jar)
Iceland is great for, loads of different frozen bits.

For desert I done grilled banana & marsbars- get firm banana's and slice the top of the skin down the middle. Slice the banana into chunky bits and do the same to the marsbar's. Alternate the banana and marsbar in the banana's skin 'jacket'. Cover in tinfoil and chuck on the bbq for 10 mins :T

If you're a Costco member (or know someone who is) their burgers are fab, we used them for a barbeque last year 48 burger for about £7 and they're massive (and very nice!)!

I'd avoid chicken drumsticks - difficult to cook through with confidence on a barbie. Instead how about frozen chicken breasts, defrost and cut them into thin slices which bbq really easily and look impressive - you can get 4 thin breast slivers out of each, drizzle olive oil over and they wont stick to the grill either.

We always cook the chicken in the oven first to be on the safe side, then put on bbq. I had 75 people for daughters 18, no problems. If there are lots of people keep it as simple as you can burgers, sausages, chicken, veggie alternative.
if i had known then what i know now
