My laptop is a four years old, with a Celeron processor running Windows 7 Ultimate.

All this talk of slowness and i5 processors is a bit ridiculous. As for expecting your new laptop to last five years..... It's just pot luck.

Back up and run a clean install. Make sure that you have enough RAM.
If it's mechanically sound, there is no reason to waste cash on another laptop just yet.

Okay so this is why I didn't want to try and restore etc because I am rubbish at it! Tried to follow the instructions. Backed up onto a USB.. not enough space carried on anyway trying to follow this:

If you have a newish machine, from the vista/W7/W8 era, a factory reinstall will save a lot of time and will always make the machine run like new again

Followed these instructions but then there is NO Dell Factory Image Restore option.

Also tried to find the commit charge total and commit charge peak figures but only thing I can find is the physical memory total figure: 2038. Does say Commit (MB) 1830/4076 if that's any use.

your sisters boyfriend probably wiped the original operating system and factory restore partition, so if he has a legit W7 disc and key available, you could use that, but backup first, an external 500gb drive is around £40, or you could just use what you have and/or dvd's to backup the most important data. double check the backup is readable before continuing with a reinstall
