Hmm council tax by credit card, do you have to manually pay each month or can you setup an automated payment similar to a direct debit?

An extra £25 of rewards a year from my cc for nothing would be nice as my credit card bill/council tax come out of the same account anyway.

It depends on the council, but watch out for an additional percentage charge for paying by credit card.

Hi, I paid my council tax over 12 months for the last 10 years, however it isn't something the council has widely advertised, you have to write in to request it !!

Does anyone know the situation in Scotland?

Lots of councils in Scotland have been doing this for years.

My council required notification by 1st March for the change, otherwise you'd have to wait to the following year.
If your making the request under the new statutory entitlement to have 12 instalments then they can't set any limits on when you can and can't apply (other than the application must be in writing). They must apply the change as required in legislation.

I'm perfectly happy with the current arrangement of 10 months, though it would be nice to have those two payment free months in December/January. Indeed, I can't actually see any reason why a two month payment holiday in December/January wouldn't work. The local authority would still get their money.

Feb and March are when the local authorities/fire/police sort out of all of the budgetary requirements so the money ideally needs to be collected before then so that the end of year accounts can be sorted.

Happy to pay over the 10 months. Also use my cash back credit card so get a small bonus each month. Also my council do not charge a fee for using it and the same with the water company.

As they say every little helps!

You can now request 12 payments.

Not sure if it is the same everywhere, but with our council, if you want 12 payments you must pay on the 1st of the month.

If you choose 10 payments, ours gives a choice of 3 dates. We currently pay on the 28th, starting 28/04.

I've just sent an email asking for ours to go to 12 months. That's Carmarthenshire CC.
