    What brook said!
  • I received a reply this morning:

    Thanks for your email.

Unfortunately, our Facebook page is often bombarded with disillusioned Dental workers. The fact of the matter is, that GDC registered workers are disgruntled, as the cosmetic teeth whitening industry has undercut their high prices, leaving them without a valuable income stream.

The legislation changes on October 31st last year stipulated that now only Dentists can use upto 6% Hydrogen Peroxide. We do not use Hydrogen Peroxide in our clinics, despite having two company Dentists in Edinburgh & Glasgow.

We perform over 500 procedures each week, across 9 different UK cities. If we were doing something illegal, we would have been closed down by now. You will also have seen our Facebook page recommendations, we very rarely have dissatisfied customers.

If you still wish to cancel your appointment, please let us know - you'll also have to contact Groupon to receive a refund.

    Kind regards

I am now slightly confused. How exactly do they whiten the teeth without hydrogen peroxide? Purely dehydrating them? Their website is ridiculously vague, customers should know exactly what they are getting and they're not. Their point about 'disgruntled GDC workers' also riled me up. That still does not mean it's okay to simply block people from writing on their FB page. They could easily reply to the comments to say what they said to me above, instead of deleting anything they don't like. This also makes me wonder that perhaps they do only allow positive comments, so if someone has had a bad experience and they have posted on the FB, it will have been deleted.

Awful company, I have contacted Groupon regarding a refund.

It is not just the use of hydrogen peroxide that makes this illegal , as soon as anyone assesses you as being fit to have tooth whitening, as soon as they place their hands in your mouth they have practiced illegally and have broken the law no matter what they use to whiten your teeth with.

The gdc are prosecuting alot of people at the moment and there is a backlog but they will get round to them eg this company have just been prosecuted for illegal practice of dentistry, nothing to do with hydrogen peroxide http://www.gdc-uk.org/Newsandpublications/Pressreleases/Pages/GDC-successfully-prosecutes-tooth-whitening-company.aspx

I suspect this company may use sodium perborate which the EU is about to ban as it has alot of toxic effects, or chlorine dioxide which is a swimming pool cleaner, but they could be putting anything inside you as they won't give you the information you need to be safe.

Indeed facebook allows people to delete comments they don't like!

There are plenty of other sites with very disasatisfied customers if you google.

Speaking personally most dentists I know do very few whitening proceedures (I put off more people than I treat) but we have all seen the damage these people cause. There are according to BABTAC the organisation that represents beauticians hundreds of people sueing beauticians from problems ranging from burnt gums, teeth that have been killed off , to one lady who had her asthma permanently made worse.

Interestingly neither of the "dentists" on the website appear to have been ever registered with the GDC. A search of the registers does not show their name. Neither is the "dental technician" registered as they are required to do so by law.

It is illegal to use the title dentist if you are not registered.
  • Thank you so much.

They confirmed it is sodium perborate that they use, and a quick Google search showed me that it's on the priority list to be replaced so it obviously isn't as safe as they are implying it is.

I wrote them a long reply and I got a response of "No problem". They clearly aren't prepared to try and justify themselves appropriately. I have written to the GDC detailing what I've found out so far from them. Is there anything else I should do?
  • Here is the latest response from Naturawhite...

Please note that the GDC have no jurisdiction whatsoever when it comes to our sector - cosmetic whitening. We take the same amount of advice from the General Deaf Council as we do from the GDC you are referring to.

At present, the substance you claim to be close to being banned is currently 100% legal. So as we're offering a non-invasive procedure with a legal substance, I'm not entirely sure what you're getting at? We're not performing root canal surgery, we're simply whitening the enamel of peoples teeth using a cosmetic procedure. As a company we've spent a large amount of time and money in seeking legal advice and representation, we're quite prepared for any questioning from any authority over our procedures and conduct.

Please let me also refer you back to the point that we perform over 500 procedures per week. We remove comments from people associated with GDC on a regular basis, but any comments down to a poor service from our company we always aim to action.

    Kind regards,

What do you make of that? I'm confused!

When you reported to the GDC http://www.gdc-uk.org/Membersofpublic/Illegalpractice/Pages/Illegal-practice-prosecutions.aspx did you mention that you could find no sign of the two "dentists" being on the dental register?

Have you asked the company for the dentists registration numbers as you have not been able to find them and it is a legal requirement for them to display them?

Just starting this thread, reporting to the GDC, getting your money back and complaining to groupon they are selling an illegal service will have alerted alot of people to the dangers.

Yeah, I did. I have just replied asking for the registration numbers and a whole lot of other points! Their entire staff need to go back to customer service training, because every person I have dealt with even before this incident have been rude, pushy and verging on aggressive especially with sales.

Still waiting to hear back from Groupon about a refund. Thank you so much for your help with this by the way, your information has been invaluable as I would have confused myself trying to understand all of the legislation via Google!
  • If you knew about Sodium Perborate and its properties, you'd be aware that it's a far safer chemical than Hydrogen Peroxide to be putting in someone's mouth.

The fact that the GDC are lobbying various Government bodies to ban Sodium Perborate has absolutely nothing to do with the welfare of the public. It's simply self-preserving their industry as it's currently losing out to a far more attractive proposition to the consumer. As I keep saying, we perform over 500 procedures a week, if what you're saying is true, we'd be hurting an awful lot of these - imagine if we hurt half the people who come through our doors - how long do you think it would be until we were a national scandal? No more than two, I'd wager.

I understand you're not going to attend your appointment, that's completely fine - I'll take you out of the diary. But I'm afraid I don't really have the time to be going over the same subjects with you all afternoon.

    Kind regards,

As you can see, completely ignored my request for their dentist's registration numbers and failed to even answer whether or not they are registered. Alarm bells there?

Quite annoyed at the snappy tone towards the end of the email too. I really hope I get this refund from Groupon.

The GDC are not there to protect Dentists, they are a regulator, not a representative. They have no interest in lobbying government on our commercial behalf
