I booked a laser teeth whitening session with Naturawhite back in January as I had a Groupon voucher. My appointment is booked for March 13th. But I saw my dentist today and mentioned it to her, and she seemed concerned about the legality of it because of new legislation in November 2012.

I don't want to risk anything as it's not worth it for the sake of £50, but I would love to have my teeth whitened... Can anyone help? As far as I can make out, the whitening treatment is carried out from a dental clinic but I'm not sure if the staff are actually dentists because I see the company advertising whitening training courses quite often. Which is worrying as I don't want just anyone doing this even if it is a cosmetic procedure!

In what way are you worried about the legality? It is rarely if ever illegal to receive 'banned' procedures. As for safety concern, surely you have investigated it thoroughly before booking?

If it is not done by a GDC registrant i.e. dentist, hygienist etc with appropriate training and or treatment plan .... cosmetic or otherwise ... it is illegal practice. http://www.gdc-uk.org/Membersofpublic/Illegalpractice/Pages/Tooth-whitening.aspx

go there and you can search for the registration status of the people that would be doing it

FWIW I do not believe "laser" whitening works that well. The best systems are custom trays and carbamide peroxide gel IMHO. If you leave your mouth open long enough they will look whiter as the enamel dehydrates giving you that bling like whiteness straight away. However that WILL fade in the next 24 hours. Most of these whiteners give you "top up trays" sometimes as an additional cost which are ... trays with carbamide peroxide gel in. So why not just skip the light show and use the trays from the start which have a good record of working well.

Like I said, it came up on a Groupon deal so it was more of an impulse purchase. I am concerned about the legality of it because I don't know if the person who will be carrying out the treatment is a dentist and I don't know what level of hydrogen peroxide they use as they aren't exactly informative on the phone or online, which I am only recently discovering.

That's exactly what my dentist said today. Unfortunately I have already booked the treatment and cannot afford to have anything else done.

Will they tell you who will provide the treatment? If they will give a name you can check them out on the GDC website easily enough
  • I have looked up some of their 'dentists' via the GDC search and none of them have appeared. I also read this on their website:

    Training Courses

Through a training course package, Naturawhite enables you to start up your own laser teeth whitening business. You can get going as soon as you have successfully completed a one day course. These are formulated by a fully qualified GDC registered Dentist to help you become a certified Professional Bleaching Technician (PBT).
    Laser Teeth Whitening Treatments

In addition to training, we also offer Laser Teeth Whitening treatments. All of our Bleaching Technicians are certified by a Dentist and fully trained, so you can be assured the staff are qualified in this specialist area and completely professional.

How safe is teeth whitening? DD is almost 18 and after her braces came off she was concerned at how yellow her teeth are. The Orthodontist said he wouldn't whiten anyone's teeth under 18 - she was 15 at the time.

She spends a fortune on Pearl Drops whitening stuff (pink in colour) and personally I think because she is so pale her teeth look less white with her skin tone. I know though that once she turns 18 she's going to start talking about permanent whitening.

Her dentist tells her that her teeth are great and to leave them alone.

Pearl drops are incredibly abrasive. They wear off stain and enamel but will not whiten teeth. She will permanently damage the enamel if she continues. Get her to stop.

It is illegal to whiten the teeth of anyone under 18 as the nerve inside teeth is still large and close to the surface and you risk damaging it.

This is utterly illegal. Only a dentist can prescribe whitening. Only a qualified dental therapist or hygienist is allowed to do it to a dentists prescription. These people are beauticians who have done a one day course !!There is no such qualification as a bleaching technician.

Do not trust an unqualified person to do an illegal proceedure with unknown chemicals on one of the most sensitive parts of your mouth.

Contact groupon for a refund as the service is illegal and save to do it properly. Don't risk your oral and general health for a bargain!
