The one thing that would stop it is no ID. OP, a friend wouldn't be able to put the cheque through their account as it has to be put through the account of the person named on the cheque.
You don't want to go to a cheque cashing service, you can't put it through your bank, the tax people won't pay by bacs so there is sod all you can do.
I have already stated I cannot get a high street bank account. I do not want to discuss why but fact is I cannot get one.
A post office account is identical to a prepaid debit card, so makes no difference if i was to get a PO account it does not have cheque cashing/deposit facility0 -

PS. You're money isnt being held "hostage" but thanks for the giggles :T
It is being held hostage as i do not see why they cannot pay it by bacs... tax credits can be paid by bacs so why is tax refunds only paid by cheque only.
To me that is holding my money hostage and blatent discrimination to those who do not have conventional bank accounts.
Many people have prepaid or virtual accounts now and they are discriminating against those who do not have bank accounts.0 -

Well just to be awkward, when I have received a tax rebate, on the last three occasions the payment has been paid by BACS. But on the other hand, they sent my son a cheque!"There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -

Assuming you are a UK national (your grasp of language indicates you probably are); you CAN open a savings account somewhere.
There's not even a credit check to open a simple saving account where you can deposit the cheque.
Your options: savings account, cheque cashing service, cheque in friend/ family member's name.
It is neither being held hostage, nor discrimination. They have sent you the rebate; now it's up to you to make use of it.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0 -
Missed the BACS bit.
But as other have said you should be able to open a basic no thrills account or a cheque cashing facility .0 -

One thing has always puzzled me. Why can a cheque cashing service cash cheques but I can't put the same cheque through my son's account. Seems rather bizarre.:cool:0

I do NOT want to get into my private circumstances but I am NOT able to get a high street bank account.
My gripe is why can HMRC pay tax credits fine by bacs but only do tax refunds by cheque. Its not as if its a different organisation, its the same computer system they use, its the same banking system they use so why can they not pay a tax refund by bacs.
you say they not holding it hostage, but they are. They are denying me money that is legally mine.0 -

How can they be denying money that is legally yours when they have given it to you?
They have given you a cheque, the same as they do for thousands of people, everyone can get a very basic account and you keep saying you can't so it's something to do with your personal circumstances, and those circumstances must be very bad for you not to be able to open one.
If you want the money then you are going to have to use a cheque cashing service or just send the cheque back and forget about it as there is nothing else you can do.0
