BT Broadband - Expensive?

I currently have a defunct home phone, which does not work and i have no need for. I also have internet connectivity through BT broadband. I do not want a home phone, but do want internet connectivity. I contacted BT to ask about changing my package from the £39 per month i currently pay, and they said the cheapest they can offer is £37 per month.

I said "to be clear, you are categorically saying that for any customer it is impossible to get a cheaper deal" and they said yes, unless you want usage caps at a level you are exceeding currently.

This amount seems far too much to me and i would appreciate any guidance on this, or how i can get a cheaper deal. I have left this for too long to sort out!

  • Sounds like a load of guff to me.

TalkTalk do unlimited broadband for £6.50/mth (half price for a year) plus £14.95 line rental (or less if paid annually - £114 for the year).

Paying the line rental in advance and taking the half price offer makes the first-year cost £153, an average of £12.75 a month.

Quidco of £70 also available for signing up on top.

It doesn't matter if you want a telephony service or not, you have to pay line rental so that will be around £15 to £16 with BT, if you are prepared to pay a year rental in advance then you can get this down to the equivalent of £10.75/month,
if you are out of your minimum term on your current broadband contact you should be able to get a discount on the £16/month they charge for unlimited broadband, so unless you have a call package, then the £39 or £37 you currently pay seems to be more than 'list price' even if you are paying full price line rental.
Can you can itemise your current bill, you seem to be paying way too much, if you don't need the calls included in the line rental plan you probably should be on the basic 'weekends' call plan if you are not on that already, BT have a customer option/ Retentions department, you could do a search and see if you can get a number for them, they probably can offer a better deal than what you have been offered so far

What package services and individual package prices are you on? As without this information its impossible to determine if you've been offered a good deal or not.
