Nowadays many employers block webmail access (eg. Yahoo, Hotmail etc.) from office network.
Now if you send/receive mails from only a few regularly, you can create an online message board (with a password protection) which will be visible/editable only to intended recipient.
http://www.writeboard.com/ is a free online message board.
Usually this site is not blocked from network.

Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

Don't quite understand your point however if you have a a gmail account then it is usually possible to access it using googlemail's secure site i.e use the URL https
/mail.google.com/mail/ rather than http://mail.google.com/mail/
I am also able to use the IM function as well
My works network uses Websense
Thanks to my mate the fat scouser for these tips0 -
Well, I can't access Gmail in that way too from my office.
None of my instant messenger (except Windows Messenger which is company approved) works either.
So, I found writeboard quite helpful.Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0 -

Can you access any secure sites ? i.e. any sites with the padlock symbol (URLs starting https)
If you can't access company approved programs then you need to call your IT department !0 -
I manage a network of 600 users nationwide and this is what we find all the time from our users. People who think they know better?
We provide users with full internet e-mail which although policed for adult content we are quite generous about, and we give all users around an hour a day of surfing via a quota system to "fun" sites but again nothing adult etc.
We block webmail totally as should any company, it is such a security blackhole for getting all sorts of nasties into the network.
We also have strict rules for using the internet which if not adhered to you could lose your job !! Is it really worth losing your job just so you can get round not being able to access hotmail at work?
Your choice I guess ?

I don't know about 'people who know better' so much as the 'holier than thou' attitude of some network admins !
The fact is that there are holes in most corporate networks and users (surely they should be clients to you ?) will exploit them for their own ends. Sadly for you it is impossible to stop these exploits
There is no need to be patronising, we are all grown ups and aware of our relevant internet access policies. Occasionally accessing my gmail account at work probably breaches my company policy but it's not really the crime of the century as you make out, is it ?
You could lose your job for checking your gmail :rotfl: - you really are a drama queen !
Your attitude is your choice I guess :mad:0 -
My company provides webmail for a number of individual users and we do occasionally get "complaints" from users that they can't get onto webmail at work.
Most often, as said above, using https instead of http does work.
If that doesn't work, we provide them with an alternative URL that does work as it appears that they are banned on an individual basis. If that gets banned, we give them another. Etc etc. :beer:0 -
Sorry to say with employment law these days yes it is a perfect excuse to start DPs on anybody possibly leading to a dismissal.
The minute one of our depots are after removing somebody the first thing they ask to see is their e-mail and web stats. Everybody here has to read and sign the e-mail/web policy when the start.
Honestly it is the perfect excuse for gross misconduct.
But hey, you pays your money ..................0 -
I thought that employment law these days means there have to be written warnings that accurately reflect the misdemeanour. Retrospectively using Internet records to back up a dismissal is what the courts should slap down.0

Sounds like you could make a case for constructive dismissal in these circumstances.0 -
If you use gmail plus like my company has access blocked (quite rightly) to webmail sites then there is a way to see the sender and subject of your gmail account using Gmails RSS feed option.
Get your RSS feed link from gmail and add it to your Personal google homepage (http://www.google.com/ig)0
