Other places (ie: other links from the one you gave) don't provide that warning about class 3 being inadequate for courier use, so it'd be interesting to see what their policies actually said - end of the day, it's the policy wording rather than advice on a website that matters.
However, the original (and main) part of my post still stands. If the company are offering "top up" third party cover for their couriers then it will be third party cover in an appropriate class of use.
So no, my original advice still wasn't "dangerous" in any way
You really are obstinate aren't you?
I have a business in this industry and a courier/delivery driver must have 'hire & reward' insurance.
No ifs, no buts.
There is no 'top up 3rd party cover' that equates to 'hire & reward.' Whatever that is anyway.
You're only banging on about top up cover because the OP mentioned it, and he doesn't know what the hell he is doing because he binned the insurance quotes he should have taken, to be legal, to go with the CO-OP, the cheaper option, thus working illegally, and the CO-OP don't even provide commercial insurance!
It is a completely different commercial insurance altogether that is needed.
You don't know what you are on about and your advice is dangerous because you are wrong. Simple as.0 -
Hi,
Im in the same boat here though with a difference. I work for DPD and use a DPD van at work, Im not a franchisee, im employed by DPD. I walk to work or get a lift and my car has nothing to do with my job. However, as soon as I type in im a courier they refuse to quote me?0 -
What about entering occupation as 'Driver' ?.
I was looking to utuilise my van by quoting for deliveries on one of those 'man with a van' sites, but decided not to when I looked at what I needed for insurance.Never Knowingly Understood.

Adding business does not cover you to use your car for an employer and they are clamping down hard on this.
It covers you for your own business.Be happy...;)0 -

Do you have a reference for this?
I have business use cover so that I can use my car to go to other sites for meetings. First I've heard of it not covering me driving on behalf of my employer's business. What goes around - comes around0 -
I am interested here, I work as a volunteer and sometimes use my private car delivering the Charity's equipment.
I have declared this to my insurer and they have endorsed my policy that I am insured while using the vehicle for voluntary work. Plus they have endorsed that the exclusion of hire and reward will not apply when using the vehicle for vol work.
Does this mean I am legal? This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0 -
Speak to a broker, whilst you are effectively carrying goods for hire and reward, you are not on a time sensitive delivery slot like a lot of the large couriers are; and I guess you pootle around at your own speed.
I know Allianz do this cover - is their direct arm still called Cornhill Direct?
The key to keeping the price down is that you aren't doing guaranteed delivery times, so are not in the same league as the mad van drivers or pizza deliveries that have to get the goods delivered by such a time, or within xx minutes - or else they will be bolleauxed by the boss.0 -

If you've spoken to the Ins co and they've noted your policy you will be fine.
If you're concerned and want a paper trail, send a brief letter to your Insurer and keep a copy, saying I would like to summarise my use of the car for charity work.
I'm paid X in mileage allowance, x for wages / work for free.
I do following duties for the charity eg collect other voilunteers, visit sites etc
Please note the contents, I would appreciate your confirmation the above is within the remits of my insurance.
They should then add the letter to their records and send an acknowledgement which you can file away.

Until HMRC prove differently, Hermes couriers are self employed, so they have their own business. They are not employed by anybody.
If you could live one day of your life over again, which day would you choose?0 -

We frequently amended a Motor Trade policy to note that the spouse of the garage owner would use the vehicle for Meals on Wheels or similar. Just ensure you have it in writing.0
