Dog Microchipping Law

Hi All
As any responsible dog owner already knows it is a good idea to get your dog chipped. Now it is being made law

Do you think this will solve the problem of the number of dogs being abandoned?

I think it is a good idea for some, but it will not solve the problem in a lot of cases.
There will still be those that don't have them chipped, ie those that let their dogs run riot. Some people don't stay in one place long, such as the criminal element who tend to have the guarding breeds and then discard them when they have had their use out of them or when they get taken into prison. I don't think for a minute that those sort of people will keep their details up to date even if the dog was chipped. I certainly can't see the local yobs round here that have their dogs loose getting them chipped.0 -

That was the type I was thinking of too

Surely those who don't bother to chip just won't claim their dog if it strays just to avoid the £500 fine?
Can't see it helping in any way to be honest.
More needs to be done to stop breeding and irresponsible people having dogs in the first place.0 -

No, not at all. The kind of person who can abandon a dog isn't the kind of person who is going to get it chipped in the first place, or even take the dog to the vet for vaccinations or health checks.
With people like that around there's absolutely no way of enforcing itAccept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -

That was my thought on it too.
Unless the RSPCA or police do a door to door enquiry asking Hello Sir/Miss/Mrs do you own a dog? Can we come in and check it has it's chip? In theory, it's OK. But in reality it's going to be hard to enforce. Think about how many cars get away with being registered to the wrong keeper, not insured or taxed, etc. and we have computerised logs with ANPR cameras etc. to enforce those requirements. How do you know a dog is chipped, or even registered as existing, with no external clue? You can't check every dog or household to try to enforce it.
Maybe it's better than nothing - but perhaps the money spent trying to enforce it could be utilised a bit better, trying to educate the public on the issue (think of speeding, for example - you have the legal or financial implications of speeding and being caught for it, but many people just dodge the system by learning where the cameras are or using gadgets that detect them, whereas if you can educate them about the risks of speeding to them and others, they may consider taking a better approach to the care of their driving overall). We need to ditch the disposable attitude towards pets, that seems to be rife0 -
me too lol
you should have to sit a test in order to get a licence to breed lol First Date 08/11/2008, Moved In Together 01/06/2009, Engaged 01/01/10, Wedding Day 27/04/2013, Baby Moshie due 29/06/2019 :T0 -
I think it's a good idea in theory, but not sure how they'll enforce it. Are dog walkers going to be stopped in the street by a dog warden with a scanner? I doubt many councils have the means to fund that.0
