Why don't Landlords clean once tenants have left?

  • Landlords agents tried that with DD when she moved out. I went back with them, item by item and in the end they waived it.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

Went to view a flat a few years back. We were told it was in need of redecoration. Walked in, the whole place was mouldy, there were bugs in the kitchen, no actual kitchen to soeak of though (no units, sink etc) missing windows, broken floor tiles, smelly, broken bathroom suite. We were told we could have two months rent free if we painted/fitted a kitchen/replastered/fitted a new bathroom etc...
    We declined, surprisingly.

Also, over 3 years ago, my husband and I moved out of 2nd floor a flat.
Despite it being clean, the neighbours downstairs were grotty, and MICE found their way into our flat from a vent behind the washing machine that led down to the flat under us. The landlord gave us some poison and told us to deal with it (I was pregnant at the time, and didn't want to be messing about with poison). I asked for them to send out someone professional, and was basically told to sod off. So I did. One week later. Upped and left. The flat was in pristine condition when we left, other than the mice that would appear every so often.
That was October 2009. The flat has not been let since. I can't for the life of me think why...

This is one of my pet hates. Regardless of how the previous tenants have left the property, landlords should clean before new people move in. It's not cheap to move, and it's really galling to spend well over a thousand pounds to move somewhere and find that your first job is scrubbing somebody else's poo off the toilet.

When I moved out of my first rented property I was given a 'checklist' of things to do - defrost the freezer, cleans the seals on the fridge and behind the appliances, clean the oven (along with the 'usual' day to day cleaning things).

I left the property so clean it it looked like I'd never even lived there. When the letting agent came to check us out she inspected everything and told me she'd never seen such a clean oven in any other property. I was SO annoyed! I'd scrubbed it for so long so it looked good as new as that's what they implied on their checklist but turns out that their standards weren't so high!

Having said that, although I leave a rented property in the way I'd hope to find one I move into (i.e. straight in, quick wipe, good to go), it seems no one else thinks that way as I've had to do a deep clean on every property I've ever rented.

I moved into the place Im in now, and the back garden and shed was full of the previous owners rubbish and other stuff, this was back in October, and Im still waiting for them to get it sorted, though it looks like I'll be out before the rubbish, thankgod.

I have to clean the entire house when I got here, and the carpets smelled like cat wee...Still do, I didnt know it would be so hard. D:

When I leave, I leave it in an impeccable state, and make sure it smells clean, and looks perfect.
