new boilder - British gas

Options
HI,

I had recently had a quote for a new boiler from BG , as part of the install they will have to run a new slightly wider pipe from the gas meter to the boiler in the next room.

I would prefer that the pipe is hidden , so would probably go with the option to run it up and under the floorboards upstairs and come back down to the boiler .

This would mean that BG would be lifting the carpets/floorboards.

Was just wondering if anyone has any experience with BG doing this sort of work , Im concerned about how it would be left afterwards!

thanks

No idea about the carpets/floorboards etc but are you sure you are getting value for money with British Gas? The self employed gas Safe Regd plumber who fitted my late father's Vaillant combi boiler was so struggling for work he was fitting the same boiler in homes for one of the Big 6 on a sub contracting basis (i won't say which one). My cost? £1800 including wireless thermostat/controller, re-siting of boiler, uprating of pipes, fitting of Thermox filter, chemical flush etc. The same job, in fact, that he was doing every day of the week for the Big 6 supplier but approx £2500 cheaper!
  • yes, I should of mentioned , I am planning to get a quote from a private company from Checkatrade.

I imagine the price is quite high!, havent anything to compare it to yet.

Same as any other non carpet fitter would do it, I imagine.

i.e. pull the carpet off the grippers, and push it back on afterwards.
Depending on how much carpet is pulled from the gripper and how far away from the gripper the carpet is needed to be moved will decide on how good the finished carpet will look.
Usually they only need two small areas to access the floorboards i.e. at each end of the pipe, so it should be ok.
Otherwise, if you are lucky, he may have a carpet stretcher in his tool kit.
(but I doubt he is very skilled at using it correctly)

You could always ask a skilled carpet fitter to refit it later if necessary :)
  • ok, thanks for the replies

have arranged for a local company to come round tomorrow , will be interesting to see what they quote and how they plan to do the work.

Really the idea of having the wireless thermo controller :)
