Stranded in LA for a week due to Islandic volcano

Back in April 2010 my son and I arrived back in Los Angeles for our return flight to UK.
It turned out to be on the very day that Air France cancelled all European flights and it turned out that we were stuck in LA for a whole week.
After waiting a week we discovered that flights were leaving some days before ours so we were obviously placed at the back of the queue.
Recently I have heard about the new ruling that European airlines must compensate passengers whose flights were delayed during the last 6 years even those delays caused by the Iclandic volcano.
Can anyone advise where to begin with such a claim?
I originally booked the tickets through a travel agency who I questioned but they say they know nothing about the ruling and couldn't advise
We flew out with From Manchester with KLM via Amsterdam and our return was with Air France via Paris

You can reclaim the fully receipted expenses for accommodation/meals and travel to/from airport and hotel if you have not already done so.
If you do not have receipts, however, you will get nowhere.
I disagree
I heard something on BBC about it. They were saying that new EU regulations state that delayed passengers travelling in or out of Europe were entitled to compensation. They can claim up to 6 years ago Even if they were delayed due to the Icelandic volcano eruption.
I also read somewhere that compensation over 2700 miles distance would be 610 Euros
Ryanair are up in arms about it which doesn't surprise me

There are a number of threads on here that will give you links to the official rules.
The case that was in court, and will have been mentioned in the press, is from a couple that were affected by the volcano and the airline refused to reimburse them the costs they incurred during the delay.
The airline was taking the stance that exceptional circumstances means they do not have to provide compensation OR their duty of care.
Whilst the first point is correct the second relating to duty of care ended up in court and the couple won and the airline were ordered to reimburse them for their hotel/meals etc
The regulations are very clear that no compensation is due if the delay/cancellation is outwith the control of the airline0 -

You've got the wrong ends of a number of sticks there.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0 -
No compensation due for the delay. Simple as that, despite what you heard on the BBC.
Just reimbursement for hotels and meals and any sundries like washing. All backed up by receipt. And *NOT* 5 star hotels.0
