hi everyone, i would like to paint my mahogany veneered table. i wondered if there is anything i could paint onto it to seal the wooden finish, rather than rubbing it all down, before i do the final finishing coat. I would like to do it in off white or cram to give a shabby chic look. basically i want to do it the easiest way whilst getting a quality finish.
Keep on trucking!

i asked a similar question some time ago but I havent got around to doing it yet. I think it depends on the finish your table has currently got? If its varished then you may need to get rid of all that first. You could try painting some of that melamine paint over it but i have NO idea how that would do so prob best not to go with this idea! am sure someone will be able to tell you soon0

As its veneered then it might not be that good for the finish you want, as normally you would apply some paint and then use sand paper to rub off part of the paint, a heavy hand and this would crack the veneer, if moisture from the paint gets under the veneer it could start to lift it.
You would have to be careful only to give it a light sand so you did not breakthrough the veneer (this depends on how thick the veneer is on your table)
Usually when painting veneered furniture you use a veneer primer first and then paint.
Have a look at this site:

Also consider getting a safety glass top cut for the top once painted as will protect any paint finish and looks pretty nice also. Not expensive to have done0

Hi, on the Old Style Moneysaving forum there are lots of 'shabby chic'ers -
you may get more advice there:

What is the existing finish?
There are no short cuts to a good finish, it's all in the prep.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

3 parts paint 1 part non sanded grout and mix till smooth hope thats a help:beer:0 -
There's stuff made under the brand Annie Sloan. No damaging the table, no real preparation required.
It's not what I would choose to do, but if its paint it or skip it, then painting is the lesser evil.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -

I am still undecided as to whether to take the plunge but it would make a change. I have had them so long, I am getting fed up with the look.
I have had a look at the Annie Sloan site, it has given me some inspiration, thanks.Keep on trucking!0
