freesat dish, arm which holds LNB loose due to rust

hi, just lost my signal. when i looked at the dish i noticed, the arm which holds the LNB isn't connected properly any more, due to rust.
when i move the arm where it should be there is no signal either.
what to do, do i buy a dish only and fit it myself, or order another one. who sells these nowadays and gives free installation ?

If you fit it yourself, you'll need to borrow or buy a satellite finder in order to get it pointing in the right part of the sky. They're not expensive, but once you factor that in, you might want to consider hiring someone who's done it before to do it quicker.

Look in yell.com or yellow pages for a CAI member installer in your area.

Mark exactly where the dish is attached to the wall bracket, then you should be able to do a straight swop pretty accuratly. The new dish has two marks to align the height.

This isn't any guarantee that the dish - and LNB - will end up aligned perfectly, surely?

If the dish is from a different maker, the LNB arm could well be a couple of degrees of from the previous installation, and merely placing the dish in the same place could leave the OP with no signal.
  • i'll post results, but once again we are totally snowed in... a lot fell this afternoon. so we can not get out, to buy the dish. might order online and hope the postman can get up the drive once it is dispatched . thanks again for all the help

Are you certain your original dish isn't failing to get a signal because of the weather conditions? I know you said the the LNB arm is not connected properly, but heavy snowfall will block the signal on even brand new dishes.
When you eventually get out to purchase your new dish, it might also be an idea to look for a more sheltered location for it

I've installed several minidishes to receive Sky digital and have never used a satellite finder - I've always used dishpointer.com and it's never taken me more than a couple of minutes to align a dish*

*Not enirely true - the last time I fitted a dish I spent about 2 hours trying to align it before I realised that there was an attenuator on the Virgin media cable I was "recycling" and this was stopping the signal getting to the box.
