BT broadband cancellation advice

Hi,
I have a couple of questions regarding BT, and trying to cancel a contract. I'm asking here because I know there's generally a lot of decent advice - and I'd like to be pre-armed going into the conversation.
Some backstory: I lived in Cardiff for a few years when I was at Uni, and in July 2011 took out an 18-month contract for BT Infinity. In August 2012 I moved to Edinburgh. I knew this was going to happen a few months in advance, so I called BT and asked about cancelling the contract, since Infinity isn't yet available here.
I was quoted something like £170 to cancel the contract, so decided instead to wait it out. As BT don't offer Infinity here, I was moved to a new contract on BT Unlimited Broadband.
My question is: as I had no choice but to switch to this new contract, am I bound to the 12-month minimum period which comes with it? I'd quite like to cancel it and move to a different provider (who won't charge me £40 per month for an unreliable connection)!
Also, BT customer services seems to have an annoying habit of telling me something on the phone, then denying all knowledge of it in a later call - is there anything I can do to counter this?
Also, I'd appreciate any advice on who to go with (though I confess I haven't trawled the forums yet for good deals).
Thanks!

Yes, because you agreed a new 12m minimum term at the new property. The fact that Infinity was not available is not relevant. BT do not guarantee every service at every address, and you chose to move to somewhere where Infinity was not available.
You did have a choice-you could have paid the ETC and switched provider in August.

Record your calls? (Make sure you make this clear when making/receiving a call).
Follow up any calls with an email summary of the call?0
