Definitely check the credit files and check they are o.k. It's not unknown for people with similiar/the same names to get muddled up either by accident or on purpose. Lazy debt collectors/bailiffs etc will go after the first person they find with that name and initial so be warned. Make sure the files are correct. Obviously he should be extra careful as he knows his parents have money problems. Also if he takes out money in his name, then legally it is his debt (whether or not it has been used to support his family and dispute any agreements between the family as to who would pay).
He also needs to think about at what level he is happy to subsidise them. He needs to think at what point he is prepared to walk away and what he wants in return for his money/help - do they need to go to a debt counsellor and get help? Does he want the money repaid at a set amount each month? Is he prepared for them not to pay the rent and to have to bail them out? etc. etc.
Best of Luck, it can't be easy.
