neighbour built badly built 10 foot boundary wall and fence

Without consulting with us at all our neighbour built a wall and a fence totalling 10foot - we don't have so much of a problem with this as we do with the fact that the wall on his side is perfect and our side is appallingly bad.

Anyone know what our rights are?

We would have gone halves if he'd have asked us.

I would have thought a wall and fencing that tall would need permission, so give your local authority a ring and ask them. If he needes permission and hasnt then they may force him to pull it down.............

I'm pretty sure that you need planning permission to erect a fence or wall that is over 6 foot.

Planning permission is always required if a wall or fence is over 2 metres high UNLESS a local building regulation or planning clause has exempted this requirement.

So yes, check with the Planning Department.

The cloud on the horizon is that if your neighbour is in the wrong you may end up with bad feeling. Depending on the neighbour's personality this could then escalate into full scale hostility. Negotiating - e.g. "if you do x y z to my side of the wall to improve its appearance, I won't complain to Planning" kind of thing, may work best.

I think its 1.5Meters before permission.

If its in keeping with other walls in the area they will no doubt be sucessfully in getting planning permission but if its out of place all the local planning department will do is make them lower it. You will still have the unsightly wall just lower.

You could try dropping hints or if that does not work, hide the wall by adding bushes and plants you know will overgrow on the neighbours side or block their view. When they complain just tell them why and that you tried to drop hints.
Hi there! We’ve had to remove your signature. It was so good we removed it because we cannot think of one so good as you had and need to protect others from seeing such a great signature.

    .

Are you absolutely sure about this? It seems very low indeed. Bog standard 6ft panels are 182cm high.

2m is the maximum allowable in most counties before planning permission is required.

Is this 10 foot in height or length?
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

You must have seen him preparing to build wall and you might have said something then?

    Hi,

The wall and fence is 10ft high. We actually don't mind the height it's the state of it we object to. We did see him erect - although I had just moved in and had a baby in the same weekend so wasn't exactly on top of my game. His side the cement is all neast and tidy and on ours it's a right state, he's put the supports on our side too. We thought he was going to tidy it up and we did drop big hints - he just said render it then. My point is more that he could have asked before doing it and we would have paid towards it being done properly. We have covered it up with reed screening which looks ok but it winds me up every time I see it.

What happened to being kind and thoughtful - I always am. Am I a dying breed?
