hi
we have an old boiler, ideal w rs 450 about 25 yrs old, started leaking 2 days ago
british home care visited and said they cant get replacement parts and have offered a quote for a new boiler, not a combi just straightforward replacement with potterton precision conventional boiler for 3498£
i am based in leeds and would appreciate any help finding a suitable alternate ,at present we are without heating or hot water as the cylinder doesnt seem to be working either and bristish gas cannot seem to get it sorted for another 2 days

  • I'd get a new condensing combi boiler and not from British Gas. You should have a Corgi registered plumber near you who would be able to do the job for you at a lower cost than British Gas. Have a look in the local phone book. Only Corgi registered fitters can install gas boilers these days
  • £3.5k for a straight boiler swap you are joking of course
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

how long will it take to sink in.

it hasn't been Corgi for nearly 5 years it's Gas Safe Registered

A national (BG primarily) will charge around 40% more than a local independent GSR RGI for a boiler install. £3.5K is absurd.
The nationals also have a habit of claiming they're 'unable to get parts' where other RGI's can do so quite easily. And so offer to fit an expensive new boiler instead. So before you pay anything out, get a second opinion from a local independent.
    What is the actual fault?

Wheres it leaking from? it could be fixable.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
  • My elderly neighbours recently had BG install a boiler for them. I wanted to scream DON'T DO IT but of course it was too late by then :(. There should be a law against what these companies charge for a simple replacement boiler job, there really should....

    thanks to all the replies
the leakage was a trickle form a little hole in the bottom of the casing, british gas enginner visited and looked around, said heat excanger needs replacing as does the casing but as the boiler is so old ,there are no spares available hence a replacement
i was wondering if they didnt have parts/spares why have they been taking money for the cover knowing they cant fix it?

3.5k for a boiler replacement seems expensive.

We paid about 2K for a new boiler. Old vented system to a combi. Removal of old tank, all the new pipe work (lots of copper pipe needed) 4 new rads, removal of one rad.

Get 3 local quotes and compare to see what price you should be paying.

I recently spoke to someone who had just had a BG boiler change. Ferroli combi out>Worcester Combi in with flush..price £2600
