Cancelling contract after 1 day

Hi all,
I already have an Orange account but my dad could get me a discounted contract through his workplace, which meant signing up for a new contract but in his name. Whilst at the Orange store today we agreed a contract and phone and signed up. During the sign up I asked two things, firstly can I transfer my number and secondly when I cancel my exisiting contract will I just have to pay for this remaining month and that's it? They said yes to both.
I got home, called up Orange to cancel my contract but was told I could not transfer my number to another Orange sim and I would have to pay for this months balance and the following month (as you have to give 30 days notice).
I am obviously unhappy about this and want to now cancel this new contract as I especially don't want to be paying double for two months!
I understand that there isn't really a 'cooling off period' for phones purchased in store but would I be able to cancel the contract on the basis that Orange were unable to fulfil on the two points discussed during the transaction? I will be going back in tomorrow and some technical jargon to throw at them would be really helpful!
I have yet to open the phone packaging as well.
Thanks in advance!
Betty Angel
P.s. if anyone knows a way it is possible to transfer your number and get out of paying an extra month let me know as well as would be happy to keep the contract if this is possible.

Well, IMHO the wording "this remaining month" is very ambiguous and can be interpreted differently.BettyAngel wrote: »...when I cancel my exisiting contract will I just have to pay for this remaining month and that's it? They said yes to both.

Yes, you pay for one month since giving the notice and no, you don't pay "double for two months".
If your minimum term expires in one month and you give a notice today you pay only for this one remaining month, nothing "double" or extra.
Re transferring the number, reportedly they do this, but this depends on your luck: Advice about Orange. I think you have to switch the old contract to PAYG first.P.s. if anyone knows a way it is possible to transfer your number and get out of paying an extra month let me know as well as would be happy to keep the contract if this is possible.
In the worst case scenario you can port it in two steps via another network free PAYG sim.0 -

I did specify with the sales person that would my exisiting contract end with my next monthly payment and I even added 'at the end of February when payment would be due', to which he said yes - so it was clear at the time what I was asking yet customer services have said I will have to pay for March as well. Therefore I would be paying twice as I would be paying for this and my new contract at the same time - this is mostly what I am not happy about.
If I had known this in advance then I wouldn't have signed up for a new contract until my one had ended - in March as it now turns out, not February.
I'll ask their advice on changing the number this way when I go in as when I called customer services they didn't offer this as a way to do it and simply said you can't do it at all.
Thanks for the advice though0 -
If you give a notice today it will end at the end of Feb (well, on the 5th of March if this makes a big difference). And you don't pay anything extra for this month.BettyAngel wrote: »I did specify with the sales person that would my exisiting contract end with my next monthly payment and I even added 'at the end of February when payment would be due', to which he said yes
Next time you want to easily keep your number and not to pay for two contracts at the same time, upgrade your old contract instead of buying a new one. However, don't expect to get as good deal as new customers get.0 -
When I called customer services they said you had to give 30 days notice to cancel the contract therefore it wouldn't end until 4 March with the final payment taken on or after 18 March...0

I don't see the issue, just port your no. out to a PAYG SIM on another network, and then straight back again. No free lunch, and no free laptop

It doesn't matter when the payment is taken. What matters is what period this payment covers. The contract ends on the 4th and you pay until the 4th. Full stop.BettyAngel wrote: »When I called customer services they said you had to give 30 days notice to cancel the contract therefore it wouldn't end until 4 March with the final payment taken on or after 18 March...0 -
This is getting a bit confusing, I think I'll just have to pop into Orange tomorrow to clarify everything. Thanks for the help0
