Ebay seller did not pay enough postage and expecting me to pay the £4 to redeliver

Bought something from ebay, item was sent recorded delivery however insufficient postage was paid - got a card through the letterbox and need to pay £4.15 to get it re-delivered.

Contacted seller and they said they have put the right amount of postage on and that I need to pay the £4.15 for Royal Mail to deliver. They will then look into it and contact Royal Mail to see what has happened.

I have asked them to pay the extra (you can do it online) however they are refusing as they keep saying the right amount of postage was paid.

If I do not collect the parcel will it get sent back to seller(it was recorded delivery) and will I win an ebay or paypal dispute if I claim the item was not received?

TBH it doesn't matter what the seller says, if RM say the postage was incorrect, it is up to the seller to sort it out.

I had a quick look on the ebay forums and this seems to come up a lot. The advice seems to be that Ebay/paypal will not get involved in postage disputes, don't pay the additional charge as you will be deemed to have accepted the charge, and if the seller refuses to pay the difference let RM return the package and file an INR dispute.

It doesn't help you to get your item quickly though :o

  • How much do you want the item?

The Post Office is the 'sellers' chosen representative, nothing at all to do with you

You dont need to concern yourself with who/how/why the seller gets the item to you - it is totally their responsibility

Lot of sellers dont get that - but them not knowing their responsibilities is not your problem either

Just wait until "the seller" manages to fulfill their side of the contract - if not - complain to Ebay for non-performance and get your money back then NEG them
When will the "Edit" and "Quote" button get fixed on the mobile web interface?
  • To be fair to the seller; I was selling the same item for 2 years and suddenly had one which slapped extra postage on and charged the buyer an additional £1 - it hadn't changed size in all that time or weight, it was just a one off. So I then changed the size [sold less in a packet] and it's been fine ever since. I refunded the difference as soon as I knew what had happened plus the extra £ as I didn't know about it until it had been paid. If I'd known I'd have told them to just let it come back and would have sent a different one out but hey ho.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

This sounds suspiciously like yet another label fallen off in the post. £4.15 equates to 2nd class recorded plus £1 handling fee.

As Soolin says postage may have come off - if wrapped in brown paper or a plastic mailng bag. Either way - tell sender you want the extra or you wont collect.

You are 100% sure its this item arn't you? I had a similar message and checked my receipts ect. and was baffled.

I told the buyer to collect and i would refund on email of evidence - so i could claim from the post office.

Turned out he was at the wrong seller.

I would also contact the seller ask him has he still got the receipt and how much did it cost to post, if it was a pound less than RM want, then the label's obviously come off. Then tell them that's what you think it is and if they could refund you the money and sort it out with Royal Mail so they can refund him the money you paid.

The only problem you may have with the above is if the item is not as described, and you want to return it. You would end up paying postage twice, as paypal can't recover more than the initial payment.
I would let it go back.

The same thing happened to me, the seller was really apologetic and refunded the postage plus extra handling fee to my PayPal account and a little extra for the trouble. It looked like the postage label had come off. Hope you get it sorted x
