Help blocking adult content sites

Options
my OH have been searching for and easy way of blocking !!!!!! sites off the computer after finding out our 13 year old DS had been watching them.
We have tried windows own, but cant do it as an administrator, and its not practical to keep logging off, have tried virgin security suite which works but it makes the computer work very very slow (cant even play candy crush lol), tried the free ones that you download which range from the completely useless to not even being allowed on FB or google images.
All we want is something simple to block the adult content site....any ideas guys???
If we can put a man on the moon...how come we cant put them all there?

OpenDNS Home is free and has customizable filters I believe which would eliminate the software aspect. You would need to ensure DS is not an administrator so he couldn't amend DNS settings. There's also the Family Shield product which is free and pre-configured. More info here: http://www.opendns.com/parental-controls

If you block !!!!!! on the PC, he'll probably just access it on his phone instead.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

And please don't be under any illusion that you can outright block all adult content on the internet.. you simply can't. You can make it harder to access, but if he wants to access it, there's always ways around any sort of filtering software available.

Really the best thing to do is have your PC in a family area so you can keep an eye on what's being accessed and have open honest discussions about adult material and how people use it.
  • Might be best to set up some filtered keywords on your router if it supports it. That way he couldn't access what you filter on any device.

E.G if i set up a blocked keyword on the virgin superhub lets say XXX,
it will restrict access to sites containing that word

You can add blocked sites into most routers.

He's 13, whatever you can do he will get round it.

Why not telll him you know and sit down and watch some with him and then discuss it. That will put him off more than anything else you can do.

You're better off just talking to him and thoroughly embarrassing him to the point where he's too mortified to look at that stuff.

After all, the Internet is for !!!!!! ;)

Its annoying but stuff does always gets through, I have various defences including OpenDNS but a look at the browser history last night showed my 10 year old had been looking at some site called Break.com which seems to be some sort of youtube site. In particular topless models at shows and topless ladies wrestling seemed to have his attention! Normally the laptop is in public but it was allowed in his room for a short time to do homework. some of his classmates have their own laptops in their rooms permanently and I know their parents won't have the technical knowledge to restrict or monitor them, web addresses are probably being traded.

I had blocked youtube explicitly, but he had still found an alternative site though so its a bit of a losing game, I will be discussing it with him later and the laptop will remain in public.
