I have already planted a few things.

Leeks, Carrots, spring onions and lettuce as well as some comfrey....Ive also started chitting some potatoes.

I will plant another batch in late Feb, march, April and may to try and spread things about.

I am just waiting for my fruit trees to arrive to get into the ground.

February is an ideal time to plant many seeds indoors. But do plant in accordance to where you live. no point sowing loads of seeds now but not being able to plant them out till June as they'll just be leggy. (our last frost date is normally 2nd week May)

Having said that, if you want to start off your sweet pea's sooner rather than later, remember they are a Hardy Annual so don't mind cold conditions (not snow though) they'll do best in an open cold frame (only close if its really cold).

Many of my customers started in early Jan - too early in my opinion even for our relatively mild area of the country. (I tell my customers that too, and we don't sell plugs this early, you only end up with disappointed customers which in the long run is not good for trade)

I have sown some chillies seeds and sweet pepper seeds and they are in the propagater! I couldn't wait. Fingers crossed,

I have some houseplant cuttings that I acquired from a friend that I am busying myself with. It's sort of keeping my impatience at bay!

I can't even dig the soil because its so wet : ( no snow tho!

It's far too early up here in the north to even think about sowing anything, even in the propagator. The young plants just end up getting pale and lanky on the window sills while waiting for the soil to warm up a bit. I add two/three weeks on to the recommended first sowing times on the back of the packet ie if it says sow March -May I'm probably looking at at least the end of March, and early April is probably a better bet given the last few summers.

I am in the northwest, but I know we have our own little micro climate around here and our back garden is pretty sheltered and rarely gets a late frost. TBH the last hard frost is usually this month, although the car might get a bare dusting into mid march. I have sown ver yearly in the past and done big plant out at Easter - was around the end of march that year. We did a bit of dashing out with old sheets/curtains/fleece at nights when it was predicted to be a cold night, but we hardly lost anything. out of 5 runner beans we only lost one and I am not convinced it wasn't a slug that ate it lol, the potatos were fine, lettuce etc. The early courgette I risked was rubbish and died even with a cloche, but a couple of early tom seeds did fine-they were in a greenhouse (unheated) though. Onions and leeks fine, sweetpeas and first early peas in the GH first then into the ground a few weeks later.

TBH apart from a bit of seed its no loss starting early-just more time and I and the kids struggle to wait any longer.
I have onions a couple of early toms (bush so they won't get TOO big if I have to keep them inside for a while lol), peppers, and chillis, on window sills plus will be banging in some herbs and salad leaves in pots this week.
DD2 and DD3 have done some sweet peas and first earlies in homemade root trainers (bog roll innards lol) today.

BUT as I say we have a full size greenhouse all be it unheated as well as a "blowaway" one. Plus tend to stick to small numbers of seeds for my early starts.

  • Bit soon for most things unless you have warmth and shelter. The seeds will soon pop up indoors but as some-one else said, need light, warmth and space to grow on.
Sweet peas indoors then under cover once up will be fine. Early broad-beans and some peas under cover outside if the ground temperature is 50 degrees f or more, just mind the mice don't get them. Last year they ate every pea I had sown in the green house - not impressed and 'rodenticide' was their reward!
    Best of luck
  • I am constantly filling and empying my online baskets with various seed suppliers
choosing bigger , then tastier, then more unusual, then more realistic...ohh where is the sun .........
I know i should be sterilising my seed trays and painting my shed but I'm obsessed with looking at pictures of lush green plants and ripe fruit and counting backwards and forwards with growing times on seed packets
....my sympathies are with you tutallulah.......
if i draw one more plan of my allotment i may be forced to wear one of those cardigans where the sleeves tie around the back........
I am often found with my face pressed to the window in the early evening this time of year muttering things like..."no..its not quite dark yet, see thats even longer than yesterday and its raining too..soo tomorow..? anybody know the forcast for tomorrow?...I can see all the way down the garden to that.....
    you get the picture ?

  • I sowed some onions seeds in modules in January, I also have some Autumn sown sweet peas out in the conservatory. I have just sown some Cayenne Pepper seeds...also the Autumn sown broad beans are out in the cold frame.

I can't wait for the spring, all this winter drearyness and rain is getting me down...

The ground is so wet I dread to think how long it will be before anything can be planted out, we need a dry spell please!
