anyone else desperate to start sowing?

So it's February, too early for tomato and sweet pea seeds? I just want to start growing something! I can't wait after last year being such a write off.

At this time of year I always get the itch to start some gardening. I am just about to do a Thompson and Morgan order, although they won't be delivered for ages, I can start planning where to put things. Trouble is, we could still get snow so it could be a long time before we can get started. I bought some cute plants from Ikea at Christmas (can't remember what they are called but they have little red berries) and I remember reading that they can be put outdoors so I am putting them on the porch during the day and they are growing very well.

Despite living in the South, having a greenhouse and a couple of heated propagators, nothing would get me sowing anything other than onions yet - and I haven't even started those!

It's not the germination that's the problem, it's the lack of light (and heat). If we get a cold, overcast spell, it will lead to etiolated seedlings that never recover from a poor start in life.On the other hand, within reason, seeds sown a little late always seem to catch up.

I was in a branch of Dobbies yesterday looking at all the tiny plug plants and wanting to surreptitiously stick a sign on the stand saying 'Not Yet!'.

As A.Badger has so well posted , have patience.
So anything you like , but my sowing when conditions have improved will be stronger / faster and crop heavier than anything you sow now .

This is the ideal time for the exotic chillis: C. chinense, C. baccatum, C. pubescens and C. frutescens. They tend to need a long growing season, but you'll have to keep them on a windowsill until the frosts have passed. And they really need a green house if put outside, unless your garden is sheltered from wind.

I gave in and sowed some chili and sweet peppers two weeks ago :-) They have germinated already and are currently basking under a fluorescent tube, they seem quite happy at the moment. Will keep keep them safely indoors for a long while yet.
  • I have also sowed chilis, peppers and sweet peas... I have no patience!
  • I'm itching to get on too, but I need to be even later as we have a risk of frost right up until June. I have this book coming today, which I'm hoping is going to help this year

Almost all the information I can find online and in magazines doesn't relate to our climate, and I really need good crops so that we can cut down our food bill when I start uni!

It is hard to not start sowing. I only started gardening last year so very unsure of what I am doing. The garden is in France too so I found last year I planted things according to the packets for the english instructions but the weather difference made a big impact on things like swede not coping well in the hot weather.

Doesn't help when a fellow allotmenteer said this morning oh my tomatoes have started peeking out. Sent me into a state of panic as I havent put anything in yet. Wish there was a simple list somewhere that said this happens this month and this the next but still looking for it.

I have some onion seed but this morning saw that march was a good time to put out sets so I doubt seeds would go to sets in that time so thinking I have left seed planting of onions too late? anyone know?
